CPU Overheating problem

I have recently fitted an Athlon AMD 64 x2 dual core processor. When I try to boot up the computer the CPU temperature rises to 80 degrees C + and then the computer automatically shuts down.

The processor replaces an Athlon 64. Before buying the new one I checked compatibility with the motherboard - all fine. (Checked this on the manufacturer website)
I have cleaned the replacement CPU and applied thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5) according to all recommendations. I have checked voltages and although these are different for the replacement CPU, I am unable to change these in the BIOS and it seems that this is automatic.  The old CPU should have a voltage of between 1.35 and 1.40 volts and the replacement one should have a voltage of between 1.30 and 1.35 volts. I haven't had a chance to check the voltage of the replacement CPU as the computer won't stay on long enough for me to run CPUid.

I have reset the BIOS, doesn't seem to affect anything.

When I first loaded the replacement CPU the system recognised it and loaded device drivers straight away.

I have also checked that the processor, heatsink and fan are installed correctly and have managed to get into the BIOS long enough to see that the fan speed starts at about 2000 rpm and goes quickly up to around 4500 rpm as the temperature rises. This was checked with Speedfan.

I have put the original CPU back in and everything works okay again. I have also tried various combinations involving the replacement CPU, my old heatsink and the new fan, my old fan and the new heatsink etc.

I have started the computer in diagnostic mode with most of the start up applications shut down and this has made no difference.

The replacement CPU is secondhand, could this be a problem?

Any other ideas?

Thank you!

Socket 939
Windows XP (SP3)

Re: CPU Overheating problem

#1-  CPU heatsink is not properly seated.  You should not see a big spike in CPU temp when you go into the BIOS (CPU running at full load) if there is good heat transfer between the CPU and heatsink.

#2-  Disable any temp monitoring in BIOS.  Why?  Cause the motherboard may mis-interpret the true CPU temp.  If you cannot disable temp monitoring, then the only other work around solution is to wait for a BIOS update.

#3-  You may have a CPU with bad thermal sensor.

Re: CPU Overheating problem

Does it need a new driver or do you have disk?

Re: CPU Overheating problem

download core temp and see what if give ya as your temp_

http://www.download.com/Core-Temp/3000-12565_4-10794077.html

cpu overheating is usually fan, heatsink install problem , something like that. are you sure that the heatsink is installed correctly.? that is sits flat , and ontop of the cpu, and not sitting on something that prevnets from sitting on the cpu properly

that socket 939 max temp is 65c.

its possible that the cpu is probalmatic,,,might have bought a bad one.

might

Re: CPU Overheating problem

download coretemp and see what temps you are getting-

http://www.download.com/Core-Temp/3000-12565_4-10794077.html

make sure you have the heatsink installed properly, and sittiing flat, directly on top of the cpu...

might check to see if there is a bios upgrade.

if heatsink , everything is installed properly, bios is up-to date...i would imagine you got a bad cpu.

Re: CPU Overheating problem

Thanks for the replies. Will try all things suggested.

So far I've ran the machine with side panel off and house fan on full pointing inside. It still overheated. I felt the heatsink as it was overheated and it didn't feel warm at all. I'm still at a loss.

Re: CPU Overheating problem

The secondhand CPU that you purchased may have been overclocked and perhaps had too much voltage applied without someone paying close attention to the temps. That is an overclocking requirement (unless the owner flat doesn't care or realize what can happen).

Re: CPU Overheating problem

I've tried pretty much everything. I have no time to do anything because it overheats after about 3-4 mins and shuts down.

I'm giveing up. Its either been overclocked or the temperature sensor is 'knackered'. Either way, it doesn't work in my system.

Re: CPU Overheating problem

Thanks for all the replies. Still have the problem though.

The only thing left is to buy another one and if that doesn't work, then it's the mobo being tempremental, but if it does work then the first processor is faulty and i'll try and get my money back. (its a ebay problem)

Thanks again.

Re: CPU Overheating problem

Bought another CPU and Heatsink and this one works fine.

Have not tested the previous CPU with the new heatsink, so my guess is as good as yours. :~
