CPU Upgrade

For the HP Pavillion a1720n desktop PC the Intel e6x00 Dual Core CPU family is listed as a CPU upgrade option. The current CPU in the PC is a E6300, 1.86 GHz, 65 nm.  The e6x00 family of CPU's has both 65 nm and 45 nm technology.  Will the 45 nm technology work with the Leonite-GL8E motherboard on the a1720n PC?

Re: CPU Upgrade

Hi:

That is a good question but one that I can't answer for sure.

Let me explain why.

Look at the BIO update. The last one is from May of 2008. It adds a microcode update for support of newer processors.

Is it possible that you can install an E7400 processor as it came out in Q1 2008? Or any of this series that came out no later than Q1 2008?

I can't say for sure.

To be safe, I would stick with the 65nm E 6x00 processors.

In other words, the best you can do is the E6700 2.66 processor, not the E6700 3.20 processor.

Definitely not the E6700 3.2, because that was introduced in 2010, long after the last BIOS update for your PC.

The E6300 2.8 came out in 2009, so that one is out too.

If you want to gamble on updating the BIOS and trying out an E7400, that's up to you.

Re: CPU Upgrade

Hi,

This is the full list:

Socket type: 775
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

Core 2 Duo E6x00
Core 2 Duo E4x00
Pentium D 9x0 Dual Core
Pentium D 8xx Dual Core
Pentium 4 6x1 series
Celeron D 3xx series

There are many options around as shown in the following link. 45nm and 65nm are two technologies probably 45nm processors  don't mate with the old motherboard like yours.

Re: CPU Upgrade

Thanks. I kind of thought that might be the issue - BIOS update versus CPU release. I will stay with the 65 nm tech.

Re: CPU Upgrade

Yes. I also had that list. That's when my question reared its ugly head. The E6x00 series listed in both technologies, but the HP specs didn't mention whether both would work. I will stick with the 65 nm tech.

Re: CPU Upgrade

Silly me...

I should have looked at the motherboard chipset specs before answering your question.

Defintely no way a Wolfdale processor will work with the 945 chipset.

You need a minimum of the 965 chipset to run a Wolfdale processor, and better still an Intel 3x series chipset.

So...Best processor for your machine is the E6700 2.66 GHz Conroe.
