Can I upgrade my a6200n to usb 3.0?

Hello, I have just bought a Pavilion a6200n with Vista running it. Now I have purchased a real nice external hard drive to protect my media files mostly. It is an LaCie 2TB. It will operate on USB 3.0. Will my a6200n handle a USB 3.0? If so do you have any suggestions on what brand or type I should go with. Improving from 480 mbps to 5gbps is going to save me hours! Thanks for any help or suggestions in advance.

Firstly please do not believe in 10 times speed, those numbers are ONLY in theory. Practically you can get 2 to 3 times depending on file sizes, still not bad. Yes, you can get PCIe - USB card for your machine, it has one spare slot:

  • Expansion Slots:

    • 1 PCI Express x16 slot for graphics card

    • 1 PCI Express x1 slots

    • 2 PCI slot

You may be able to use PCI slot but not recommended. The card should have a CD with driver. The following link shows one example, you can get 3 or 4 ports on 1 card:

Re: Can I upgrade my a6200n to usb 3.0?

The circa 2007 HP a6200n has some history before you got it? The unit was US/CN marketed, so lets go local.

PCIEx1 USB3.0 card.

How much RAM is on the motherboard? It only shipped with 2GB installed, I surmise it has (2) 1GB modules?

My suggestion would be to run CPU-Z to confirm what is in each RAM SIMM slot (there are 4 slots). It's likely to have PC2- 5300's.  Upgrading to 4 GB total will aid in performance. 1GB SIMMS
