I have an HP LaserJet IIIP which I need to connect to my new HP laptop. I have read many posts on the problem but I am still confused on what to do. I admit I am a novice to this sort of problem and have very little experience in this area. I bought a usb to parallel printer cable. When I plug the cable into the USB port I get an unspecified device called a IEEE - 1284 Controller. Clicking on In properties and hardware I find the port location to be "Port_#0001.Hub_#0005" and the Device status to be "This device is working properly". Troubleshooting does not identify a problem and Windows 7 will not guide me through the process of changing this unspecified device to a printer device. I have added a printer to the LPT1 port to see if Windows 7 could find drivers for the IIIP, which it did. Under the "properties" of the unspecified device driver, details (two files in the C drive ) are shown but one is not allowed to access the update driver, roll back driver, disable, and uninstall functions.
What do I do next? What do I need to do so that the unspecified device will become my printer device? If I am asked for the location of the IIIP drivers what do I do?
Thanks,

Update ... I changed the LPT1 port to USB001 (virtual printer port) and I have a little success but definitely not a success story. ![]()
