Compaq Presario - Error: System Fan Has Failed

Hi,

I have an intermittent error message that appears on bootup at POST:

ERROR: System Fan Has Failed.

Service PC to prevent damage to the system.

Press <F2> to continue

Spec:

Compaq Presario WE220AA-ABU CQ5308UK (out of warranty).

BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. v5.15 (06/11/2009) - SMBIOS: v2.5

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 215 - 2700Mhz

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64

Tried -

  • Modifying the CMOS settings to alter the behaviour of the fan. No settings applicable
  • Opened the case and noted that while the System fan was running, it was noisy so replaced it like for like.No change in the error.
  • Using a can of compressed air, thoroughly dusted out the computer's innards. No change in the error.

My next move would be to update the BIOS to see if by doing do, I'm hopefully presented with some fan settings, but I've searched for an updated BIOS here without success.

Can someone shed any further light on this issue, please?

Is there an updated BIOS version for this model?

Thanks,

ES.

Re: Compaq Presario - Error: System Fan Has Failed

Try a hard reset as follows:

1) Remove the battery and unplug the DC power adapter.
2) Press and hold the power button for more than fifteen seconds.
3) Plug in the DC power adapter (leave the battery out for now)
4) Press the power button

Please post your positive or negative results here in your thread.

Hi Erico, I will give this a go , but before I do I'd like you to explain what this operation will technically do with respect to the error message I'm seeing, please?
I don't belive this procedure is documented on the official page for the machine....?

Thanks,
ES.

Re: Compaq Presario - Error: System Fan Has Failed

A hard reset essentially drains all residual current from the electronic components. It is documented in the manual pages of some other notebook PC models.

It has been known to bring notebook PCs back to life. There is no guarantee that will happen but it does work frequently enough to make it a worthwhile trying.

Re: Compaq Presario - Error: System Fan Has Failed

Hi Erico, the computer is a desktop PC - not a notebook.
I am assuming that by a hardware reset, you're referring to an articlce similar to this one: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=uk&lc=en&docname=c01684768

Oops. My mistake.

Ok.

Purchase a fan from NewEgg or another vendor that is the correct type for your CPU socket and replace it.

You will need to purchase one that is quite low profile so it will fit in the OEM case which is a tighter fit than an enthusiast case.  The large fans\heatsinks will not fit inside the case.

this type is what you should look for. they are quite cheap. Go online to the company website to get accurate instructionsfor removing the old one and installing the new one. You will need a high quality thermal interface material. My own personal preference is Arctic Silver's Ceramique 3.

Re: Compaq Presario - Error: System Fan Has Failed

I already replaced the fan, like-for-like. See my original post...

Download a temperature monitoring utility. If the temp is <55C or less then all is well and you can ignore the error message.

Sorry about mistaking PC for notebook. It has been a long day for me.
