HP Pavilion a1640n
Wndows XP sp2 32-bit
NO error
no real change - added new mem (from 2GB - 4GB last year)
I powered down - no problem. Next day - pressed power button - no action - no beeps, colors, etc, nothing.
BTW my HD light has always been orange in color.
Has had problem in the past with buzzing sound from front of case. Thought it was/is fan, and would just press case with finger until noise stopped.
No heat problems that I could detect. No viruses - but this must be a hardware thing cos it would not even boot.
Poked around inside a day later - moved fans, cheked wireing - cos I thought it might be power supply - and today it booted up and seems to be working (one hour later) fine. I just don't want this porblem to reoccur and maybe fix whatever made this happen in the first place.
Would appreciate any help you can give as I rarely had a problem with the box, and wish to keep using it. Two years (or so ) ago (before I upped the ram) I did have to restore the OS due to a virus - I think was common; lots of pop ups; then would not boot right - but that worked & this has been only prob since. I've heard things about the front fan, heat problems, even the card reader being a factor in non booting.
Also: What can I do about that annoying buzz sound in the front of the case? Could that be part of the problem?
Shoud I just be thankful it works & wait till it doesn't?
Brad

Hi Brad,
Intermittent problems can be extremely hard to solve. Field engineers often times have to swap out parts and then wait if the diagnostics don't pin point the problem.
Be sure that the electrical outlet is always on (no timers or switches) and that the PC's power cord is tight at both ends. If your location is in an area of electrical "brown outs" then a low voltage may cause your PC not to boot.
