DVD player thinks it's a CD only player

I have a Compaq Presario SR5123WM that has a 16x DVD(+-)R/RW 12x RAM(+-)R DL Light Scribe SATA optical drive that came with the computer and that doesn't recognize any type of DVD in it, but plays and burns CDs beautifully.  Would there be any jumpers or firmware on the machine that would cause it to think it's a CD only player/burner.

I'm running Vista, but it was a problem while I was trying to use the Recovery Disks and there wasn't anything on the hard drive.

There are no error messages per se, but when a DVD is put in, the light flashes for a while as it's looking for something on the DVD and then it ejects with a message to insert a disk.

Device Manager and BIOS recognize the optical drive as a DVD player/burner
