I have an HP pavilion elite desktop. The computer stopped recognizing the hard drive and I gathered it crashed. I installed a new hard drive and ran the system recovery disk's. I went in to bios and the hard drive is recognized. When it rebooted i got the same message, "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". When I did this it just reformatted the drive and reinstalled Vista, same result.

Hello hayjor, You might try this. If your new hard drive came with a Hard Drive CD, insert the CD in the optical drive and see if the system will boot to this Hard Drive CD. If so, you can setup the hard drive using the CD tools.
If you do not have the Hard Drive CD, you can go to the manufacturer's web site and download and burn it to a CD.
Sometimes this works when other options do not.
It may be that you have another issue going on, perhaps the hard drive controller.
I would also check the cables connected to the new hard drive to insure they are connected properly.
You might try connecting the Sata cable to another port. The system prefers the boot hard drive be connected to port0 on the motherboard.
You might enter the BIOS and reset the BIOS to the default settings, save these settings and reboot the system.
Just a few things to check.

Hello hayjor, You need to enter the BIOS and in the Boot section, select the first foot device as the onboard CD\DVD drive.
Then the second boot device should be the hard drive.
Save these settings and exit. With the Hard Drive CD in the optical drive, the system should boot to the Hard Drive CD.

Hello hayjor, Can you advise the Brand and model of the new hard drive. Also the software you downloaded.
I can then take a look and see if you have the proper software.
This all may be of little use but is just a process of trying to see what has failed.

similar problem. basic recommendation: set bios to start on cd/dvd rather than hd on startup. this way computer will read the cd/dvd first and boot. pay attention to bios settings when up & running so as to reset bios when necessary. ex: sata or ide setting initially. do not change from sata or ide once os (operating system) is installed. presently running ide mode on gamer comp. (mid range @ $3,ooo) would like to run sata mode but don't won't agrivation of re-installing drivers/os. if i change from ide to sata mode with os installed more than likely my system will crash. bios for my evga mobo (motherboard) has approx. 50 settings most of which i can change ex: voltage/freq/modes/devices as well as: O.C. (overclocking=higher cpu speed without component change) ex: instantly OC from 3.2 ghz to 3.7 ghz by sellecting dummy OC setting & restarting comp. yes system will run faster but may heat up components & become unstable. thus i updated the front chassis fan from 900 rpms to 1500 rpms & whalla cpu temp is down form 30 deg C to 22 deg C ( this creates a possitive pressure in side chassis & coupled with rear fan @ 1200 rpms = excellent especially since i've no air condition available.) note: bios also displays temps. as well as a mobo on board debug/temp indicator. alot of info but help to anyone who may be a novice & considering a dsk top gamer. sincerely, butch c.
