Does anyone own a HP Compaq 8200 Elite SFF with an i7 processor?

The PSU make a strange noise as if the fan is slowed down  (like a brake on a car)  when the PC is turned off.  I have never heard this sound on a 8200 Elite with an i5 processor. The PC makes a very high pitched tone when it is running which is very annoying and gives me a headache. Onsite support have replaced the harddrive, systemboard and the PSU without any luck and now they want to replace the CPU. The Pc is brand new. Is there anybody out there with the same experience?

Uhmmmm, waht about the case fan. That is the main component that gets throttled faster or slower. If it has a noise problem, then it doesn't matter what the CPU or motherboard does. I have no idea why anyone would replace a hard drive for fan noise, but that obvisouly would not do it. Make sure you know where the noise is coming from... open the side panel to get a better listen.

It's very hard to locate the noise source. It's like the noise is "around" the Pc.

If the noise gets louder and software.. during use, it is probably the case fan. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace if you want to do it yourself.

I have replaced the case fan today without any luck. A high pitch noise is again in my ears. I have spent the day at work together with several HP Compaq 8200 Elite i5 Pc's without any anoying sounds at all. The DVD drive, the CPU and the RAM modules are not replaced yet.....

Re: Does anyone own a HP Compaq 8200 Elite SFF with an i7 processor?

In my whole experience with PCs, the only things I have found that made high-pitch noises that change pitch are fans (case, power supply, processor cooling), power supply (once - and it wasn't very long before it started smoking and faile - it was a large capacitor that burst), CRT monitors - these can be super annoying because they can be very high pitched and annoying and hard to tell where the noise is coming from... simple way to tell is simply turn it off.. CD and DVD drives can also product high squeals, but only when they spin up. Hard drives too, but the noises are less noticeable unless they are failing big-time - again... simply pull the power plug from the back of the drive and turn on the computer to see if the hard drive is causing it. Memory will not cause the noise. The motherboard will not cause the noise... unless a cap is venting and your PC will fail in less than 10 seconds when that happens.
Hope it helps...

Re: Does anyone own a HP Compaq 8200 Elite SFF with an i7 processor?

Thank you for your info.  I think that I have tried everything and I have started the Pc without power to the drives but the noise in my head starts about 30 sec. after when the powerswitch has been activated. After power off I can still hear the whine sound. I can't hear/feel any noise at all from my old dc7800 CMT even if it's standing on the table next to me.  I wonder if it is the combination of the sound from the fans. It's like the Pc is surrounded by "something" wich I can't locate. It is just like tinnitus (I think) and I fear for my health and I think I have to get rid of the Pc but HP wish to replace the CPU first. It's a lot of money to put in a closet.

The processor will be replaced monday and HP say that is a known issue. Maybe I should ask for new RAM, a new DVD drive and a new case. A kind of way to get a new Pc............

[ Edited ]

The HDD, PSU, MB, case FAN, and the CPU is changed by HP without success. The whine sound in my head appears 5 - 10 sec after the Pc is turned on. A secon person can't hear the whine and he thinks it is a relief when I turn the Pc off. Something is rotten but I don't know what to do.

The PC is on its way back to the supplier and he is welcome to keep it.
