Epson 960 won't print in Windows 7

I just purchased a Compaq CQ5504F with Windows Home Premium 64 bit.  Hooked up an Epson 960 printer  & downloaded & installed the recommended  driver-epson11889.  The printer shows up in the Device Manager but does not give the option to make it the default printer when I right click the icon.

The program Epson Easy Print does not show up when I search for it (even though the installer said it was successful).

I've tried the install a couple of times with no success.

Would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Dennis

Re: Epson 960 won't print in Windows 7

Hi:

Thanks for the reply.

Epson Stylus Photo 960 Ink Jet Printer is the correct one

The 12578.exe is for 32 bit.  The 1189 is supposed to be for 64 bit .  I contacted HP Tech Support & they say there is no driver for 64 bit.  They included a special code to buy discounted Epson products with free shipping

I just wrote back to Epson & a copy from their own websit ethat says the 1189 (called Epson EasyPrint) is a 32 &  64 bit driver for Vista & Windows 7.  When I install the driver, it says it was successful, but I can't find the program anywhere on my computer.  The printer shows up on the Device list, but won't let me set it up as default.

The 960 is a great photo printer & I have 12 cartridges for it.  I also have an Epson Stylus Color Photo 760 (at least 12 years old)  that works perfectly without havng to install any new drivers. Thanks again for trying to help.Dennis

Re: Epson 960 won't print in Windows 7

You might try this, uninstall the software, reboot, right click on the installer and select run as administrator.

Re: Epson 960 won't print in Windows 7

Hi:

The program Epson EasyPrint does not show up on the computer after many searches- so I can't uninstall it.

All I can find is the installer. Tried install again as Administrator,

That doesn't work either.

Wonder what Epson is going to say.

Thanks again:

Dennis

Did you look in Programs and Features list in control panel?

Re: Epson 960 won't print in Windows 7

Yes I did.

Got an answer from Epson Tech support this AM.

There is no 64 bit driver for the Epson 960.   The link from Microsof tis to Epson's Windows 7 download page.  There is one download for 32 bit.  The other is for Epson Easy Print which is a print utility that can run in 64 bit.  Without a 64 bit driver, that program is of no use to me.

I reported the confusion to Microsoft so they can remove 64 bit compatibility from their website.

I'm going to give Epson an earful for not providing a 64 bit driver.

Thanks again for your efforts, it's much appreciated.

Hi:

Got a final answer from Epson.  They are not going to write a driver for 64 bit.

NIce eh?

Maybe you should reward that behavior and buy a Canon printer.

Re: Epson 960 won't print in Windows 7

Epson is still one of the best printers around & I got a Workforce 610 4 in 1 for $70 including free shipping.

I had to replace my old Microtek scanner anyway, plus the 610 reads dozens of memory cards (I have 3 digital cameras) all with different cards.  So I don't have to use external card readers anymore.

I'll be keeping my XP machine -so I can still use my 960 on that.

Take Care
