Hello
A couple of days ago my Ethernet Controller stoped working.
My PC is a Compaq SG3-320UK running Windows7 64Bit
The error message is that the drivers are not installed.
Well they used to be and I've not changed anything.
The only change to the Computer was that Firefox and Thunderbird updated themselves (and switched AVG e-mail checker off in the process). However that was the day before it stopped working.
I did a system restore to a point when the Ethernet Controller was working, but still no joy.
I've tried downloading several different drivers and installing them, but no joy.
The error message when installing the drivers from the HP site is .259
According to ASTRA32 the controller is a rtl8139/810x
As I say, it was working fine until a couple of days ago, and now it's just stopped.
Help, please.

Hi:
If you have not done so already, please download and install the 4th driver on the list at the link below:
If that doesn't get it, I don't know what to tell you.

That doesn't seem to work either.
The installer program tells me it's worked, but I get an error message from Windows saying it hasn't worked.
The Ethernet Conector is still showing up with the yellow exclamation mark.
It's not identifying itself as a Realtek Ethernet device, either. It just says Ethernet Connector.
Is it possible the Connector has do I need to do something to the motherboard?
I'm at the limits of my knowledge of how this stuff works now and dn't really want to have to lug it back to PC world tomorrow and see if they can fix it...

Hi:
It is definitely a driver issue with that network controller.
Try right-clicking on it this time. Select Uninstall, and check the box that says uninstall driver if you have that option.
Then reboot the PC and see if the hardware gets installed.

Hmmmmmmm
According to this page
The Ethernet Controller is actually a Realtek RTL8105E
Would that still use the same drivers as the one I just tried?
Any help gratefully received

Hi:
Shame on me for not looking at your PC's support page, and just going with what that program reported.
No, there is a different driver for the 8105E NIC. Try the 5th one on the list.

OK, I tried the correct file (my apologies for giving the wrong info in the first post.
The Install Shield says it has installed correctly.
However I then get a Windows error message that:
Device Driver Software Was not successfully installed
Please contact your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed
Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller XFailed
I used the installer to uninstall before installing this version (if that makes sense) rather than repair, as I fgured it would be best to be installing that file "clean"
Is it just broken?

Hi:
I don't think it is (hardware) broken, but it is now above my ability to try and diagnose.
I beleive it is a major registry/operating system issue.
When I am confronted with issues like you're having, I back up my files and do a complete system recovery.

Do you mean Start in Safe Mode and select the Repair Your Computer Option?
I was considering that.
Or taking it back to the shop, it's only just over a month old...
Thanks for the help so far
