I have the two bays open that could be used and I am checking to see what other people suggest.
I would prefer using a hard drive for additional storage and avoid external ports being used.

Hi,
I have the same cabinet with my e9280t. What two bays are you interested in using? Just the media bays?
- Optical bay -- one 3.5" HD with a bracket or two 2.5" HDs with a bracket
- Hard drive bay -- two 3.5" HDs or 4 2.5"HDs or 1 3.5" and two 2.5" HDs using adapter brackets
- Pocket media bay----you might be able to slip a 2.5" or 3.5" HD into this bay after removing some cables etc.
- Personal media bay--- you can loosely slip in two 2.5" HDs on a single bracket or one 3.5" HD. It might be possible to align a 3.5" drive so at least one screw will work. A power and USB connector have to be disconnected.
The motherboard in your PC has 6 sata ports which is ample for adding more sata devices.
You can remove the side panel and front cover for inspection. These HP 'how-to" articles should be helpful.

Do you think a SSD drive would be good to put here, then clone the c: drive to move Windows 7 and programs.
--Pocket media bay
I have not opened this bay
----Hard drive bay -- two 3.5" HD
Full --2 tb drives already installed
This will free up the 2 main hard drives for storage and backups
----Personal media bay
I have 1 tb drive from the original purchase that I upgraded. I will going to try to do what you suggested.
I have practically upgraded this entire system and it only improved the original processor and motherboard performance.
Upgrade from original install
XFX Radeon HD6870 PCIE 2GB DDR5 Dual Mini DP HDMI DUAL DVI 900M
16 MB DDR3 1333/1066
Caviar Black 2 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache
Caviar Green 2 TB SATA

Hi,
If one of the optical bays is empty then use a 5.25" to 3.5 adapter .
The Pocket media bay has an internal bracket holding the USB connector and power. That bracket has at least two screws (maybe more) that need to be removed before the bracket can be removed. If you can do that then a 2.5" SSD will fit. You'll the need a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter and many of the SSDs have them in the box.
