Fan after BIOS update

Yesturday I updated my BIOS after I went on HP. I updated the BIOS and restarted the computer. It took about 10 seconds for it to boot and it said something about the BIOS being reset. Then, shorty after the fan started going crazy. The computer shut off and restarted by itself, saying the tempurature was too high.

The fan has never been this loud. I tried going into the BIOS and changing the setting of the fan but when I was in the 'advanced' section in the BIOS, there was no hardware monitor or anything. Could someone help me turn down the fan?

Also, I have a Pavilion m9517c.

Hello Patrick-T, Sorry to hear your BIOS flash did not go as expected.

Some BIOS flash updates will reset the BIOS to the default settings, while some others will keep the original settings.

I would try to perform the BIOS flash again, and see if it results in a better outcome.

Make sure the BIOS update is the correct  one for your system.

Here  is a link to the BIOS for your system.

Just some thoughts.

Re: Fan after BIOS update

I tried it again and it did the same thing, and the fan is still loud.

Thanks though

Hello Patrick-T, Sorry that did not resolve the issue.

You might try resetting the BIOS manually, if you have not already.

If you do not know how this is done, Here  is a link to the HP web page that shows how this is done.

Look for the instructions in the Clearing The CMOS Settings at the bottom of the page.

Once the BIOS is manually reset, you might need to go back into the BIOS on the reboot and set the BIOS to the default settings, save the settings and reboot.

Just another thought.

Re: Fan after BIOS update

I opened my computer and found that lots of dust had collected inside of the fans. I blew/took all of the dust that I could out, and now the fan is quiet.

Thanks for helping.

Re: Fan after BIOS update

I am having the same problem. I just installed the bios update and now the fan runs loudly for about 3 to 4 minutes, slows down for about 1 to 2 minutes and then back to running loudly again. If this is caused by dust accumulation then why did it start right after the bios update?

Cleaning out the dust worked for me as well. Surprised me.

Re: Fan after BIOS update

I had a colleague bring me her sisters HP Pavilion P6000 series computer with the Pegatron Violet6 motherboard.  I was told the computer kept locking up.  After some standard troubleshooting, I opend the case and discovered a heavy layer of dust on the top of the cooling fins under the fan.  Obviously the CPU was overheating, leading to the lock-ups.

I was surprised to see this, and realized after looking at the situation for a few minutes that the CPU fan blows air INTO the heatsink instead of drawing air OUT of the fins.

As expected, when I cleaned the dust off the top of the heatsink fins, the computer no longer locked up, but I was reluctant to give the computer back to my colleague's sister, only to have her face the same issue again.

I unscrewed the fan from the top of the heatsink, further cleaned out some remaining dust that could not be blown out with compressed air, flipped the fan over to reverse the air flow, and re-attached the fan with the four screws.  Now the fan will draw air into the sides of the heatsink and pull it out through the top, more like what I'm used to.

I'm not certain this is the ultimate solution, but it may help, as the air will be drawn into the heatsink over a wider area than was present under the footprint made by the fan sitting on top of the heatsink.

Maybe this is a strategy that will work for others trying to prevent overheating on this motherboard.
