Going around in circles.....

How do I connect a firewire for HP Desktop  G5120uk....Windows 7 (to connect to a Sony Handycam HDR-HC7)

Camera , computer, dazzle, and all sorts of paraphanalia about to go out the window with me close behind!!!!

I am looking at the product specs for your PC at the link below.

Nowhere do I see any firewire connectivity listed, which may be a major cause for your frustration.

There is a relatively easy solution and that is to purchase either a PCIe x1 firewire card or a PCI firewire card.

Below is a picture of the motherboard for your PC.

A PCIe x1 card would go in one of those small black slots (I think one already is filled with your wireless card), parallel to the bottom of the picture, or a PCI firewire card would be installed in that white slot parallel to the bottom of the picture.

You can check Amazon UK (or elsewhere), and here is a list of them.

Pick the one you would like the most and install it using your PC's ugrading and servicing guide manual to help you get the case open, etc.

After you install one of those, you should be all set.

Thanks for your quick response and detailed reply for which I am indebted.

Before I install a firewire card and proceed as suggested may I mention that

I also have a Nikon D5100 and I am able to transfer videos from this camera to

Windows Live Movie Maker on the same computer. Does this indicate that a firewire must

be involved somewhere?I am not too computer literate so forgive my naivety.

You're very welcome, Spudick.

If you are currently transferring videos to your PC, then you must be doing it via a USB cable, and firewire is not involved.

Your camera may have the option of transferring files via a firewire cable or USB cable.

If you are fine with how you are operating now, then there is no need to add a firewire adapter to your PC unless you want to.

I think firewire normally has a faster transfer speed (up to 800 MBPS if you get a firewire card that allows this speed)  than USB. I think you can get cards with 400 or 800 MBPS transfer speeds.
