GPU upgrade on HP Pavillion Elite 532sc (HPE-532sc)

Hi there I have the HP Pavillion Elite 532sc and want to upgrade my GPU (NvidiaGT420)

I`ve been recomended to try this card XFX Radeon HD6870 "Dual fan"

My PSU is 460W. This card demands 500W, but i`ve been told this should not be an issue if i use it "with care".

Does my motherboard support the 2 additional power-cables this card requires, and if it does, are these the power connectors behind the battery on the motherboard?

Appreciate your feedback on this and/or any other suggestions on upgraded GPU.

Re: GPU upgrade on HP Pavillion Elite 532sc (HPE-532sc)

Lystfiskern, welcome to the forum.

Where to start?  The card that you selected is 10.3" in length.  I normally recommend staying at 9" or less.  This will assure the card will fit into the space provided.  Some members have been able to use cards measuring 9.25" without problems.  The smaller mid-size cases don't have much room to spare.

The cables that connect to the two PCIE power ports are on the power supply unit (PSU).  The PSU in the computer will not have them.  In my opinion, you will have to replace the PSU if the card requires more than 460W.  HP engineers the PSU's to function with the components installed in the computer.  The PSU is not recommended for upgraded components.  Even the video cards are built to HP specs.  They are not gamer level cards.

Re: GPU upgrade on HP Pavillion Elite 532sc (HPE-532sc)

Thank you for the swift reply. Obviously I`m a newbie at this,,,have only upgraded GPU one time before, a few years ago on a different pc. Then, to the best of my recollection, the Asus EN9500GT did not have seperate power connectors. Anyway, your answer is clear. My 420GT will have to do for now. :-)
Best regards.

Lystfiskern, you are welcome.  It is my pleasure.

I believe that you made a good choice.  The card that you have is should do a good job.

Re: GPU upgrade on HP Pavillion Elite 532sc (HPE-532sc)

Well....couldnt help myself som I ended up ordering an upgrade after all....

Went for a XFX HD770, after having been assured from the producer that it would work fine with my systems config and power usage. Found that I had one 6 pin PCIE graphics card power connector availble.

Your thoughts on this?

Best regards from Norway.

Re: GPU upgrade on HP Pavillion Elite 532sc (HPE-532sc)

Hi,

The EVGA 550 TI will work with a 460 watt power supply. This card is 8.25" in length.

Open up your PC and do some measuring in parallel with the PCI-E x16 slot to see how long of a video card will fit. The slot adjacent to the PCI-E x16 slot needs to be vacant. Look carefully at the motherboard and makes sure that components on the motherboard don't interfere with the installation of the video card.

The new Radeon HD 7770 is a PCI-E version 3 card. I haven't seen any results on compatibility issues.

Re: GPU upgrade on HP Pavillion Elite 532sc (HPE-532sc)

Hi there.

The GTX 550TI was also under consideration and your EVGA really looks sweet. To bad that brand isnt that well known here in Norway... might have chosen differently.

What I searched for was the most modern arcitecture availble, mid-price (or less) gaming "for all" and that had the potecial to bring along for a crossfire-setup if i were to build a pc myself in the not-so-far future.

However as I said i have already ordered the 7770.

I did take measurements to make sure that I have the space needed for this particular 7770 card.

XFX HD R7770 BLACK EDT DD

Dont have a ton of space around it to go, but that should not be a problem since the cooling is really good on this one and my pc is running cool&fine now. Card is said to use a max of 130 watts on full load. I`ve been told PCIEx16 3,0 cards are all back-compatable down to PCIEx16 2,0 cards.

I`ll let u know how it works out after a few days testing.
