I have (after good advice in hte OS forum) sucessfully installed Win XP instead of the factory Vista.
Everything now works just fine exept the DVD-functions in the CD/DVD unit.
Data CD and music CD can be read OK and burning CD works. But DVD's does not at all work.
When trying with Win Media player, it starts the program but the says "wmplayer.exe har recognised a problem and must be terminated" ad the goes down.
The driver ths system use for the CD/DVD utit is old, from July 1st 2001, version 5.1.2535.0
The driverfiles gives the following information:
File version: 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.0804413-2108)
Is there a newer and better driver to be used?

You stated DVDs do not all work. Does that mean you can read and burn some DVDs?
You didn't happen to make Region changes from within the Device Manager -->DVD device, did you?
One alternative is to update the DVD device's firmware. You will have to search to find the firmware for XP. You might be able to update it through the HP Help and Support program. Your drivers are fine. They are the norm for XP.
Another possibility is that wmplayer.exe is looking for CODECs and can't find them.
try another media player like the classic media player. Microsoft is not the only player in this game. There are free players available. Here is a link to a site where you can find alternative media players.

After updating Win medai player to ver. 11 and installing an up to date DVD Decoder it works fine.
(I installed Roxio Cine Player recommended from Microsoft)
