I am trying to put an i7 870 in an HP 8100 elite sff but it won't boot up. I get 6 beeps. If I put the old cpu back in it works. Any ideas?

Did you make sure everything was compatible first?

The i7-870 is listed as a supported processor in the Technical Reference manual. Which one did you try?
Your PC might need a bios update. What bios level is your PC at?
What is the product number on the tag for the 8100 sff

Hi:
Big Dave is correct that you probably need to update your BIOS to the latest revision.
If you have the original BIOS or a BIOS revision before 1.05A, that is probably the reason your processor is not working.
Here are the release notes for v1.05A:
ENHANCEMENTS:
- Updates the microprocessor code to revision 4 for Intel Core i7-8xxx and
Intel Core i5-7xxx Series Processors.
FIXES:
- Fixes an issue where the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is not disabled
properly from the Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System.
- Fixes an issue where the F10 Setup VGA Configuration incorrectly shows all
video devices as "Primary" when multiple graphics cards are installed in the
system.
Warning: if you need to flash the BIOS, you must disable or uninstall your antivirus program or it may interrupt the flash thinking a virus is attacking your BIOS.
Flash the BIOS with the supported processor (your old one) installed. Then once you have updated the BIOS you can install your new processor and it should work.
You may as well flash to BIOS v1.07.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had already updated to the latest bios. It did not help. It turns out that when you upgrade the 8100 elite to an i7 you have to add a seperate video card. That's why I was getting 6 beeps. Thanks for the help.
