Greetings,
I come in here for my step-father. He has a HP A1740 PC and would like to upgrade his video graphics card to a 1GB.
I was thinking he could have a GeForce GT 220 like I have bought for my M7590N. However, he has a 500w PSU. So, I think he could buy a better one than I have bought.
I bought the GT 220; because I didn't want to change my stock 300m PSU. I only have a small problem with my 220. I got a blue screen of death when I use Internet Explorer. It's a driver or hardware acceleration problems stuck in a endless continuous mode.. I control that manually when not playing my few games.
What do you recommend for his computer?
I'll awaits your reply.
Thank you.

Well it looks like he has a C2D 6300 CPU @ 1.83mhz, 2GB ram and Intel GMA 950 intigrated graphics, so I would say don't go over a 9800GT 1GB b/c your CPU will bottleneck the videocard and you will have wasted money going any higher, the GT 220 is a way lower end card.
Now what does he want to do this this card? Gaming, video, graphic design??? The 9800GT goes for about $95.00 CAN at the lowest on Tigerdirect.ca. It does require a 400w PSU but I think you said you had a 500w in the computer so you should be good.
Also That computer came with VISTA installed I woul dalso recommend upgrading to Windows 7 as it is far less of a hog on computer power. Also consider a new CPU as that computer can handle Core 2 Duo E6x00 so that means E6600 @ 3.06ghz vs the 1.83 that you have that will help boost performance, and if you go to a higher processor like the E6600 then you can get a better video card. Again this all depends on what he is using the computer for as well.

He has just bought both the card and processor you suggested for his computer HP A1740N. He is a casual gamer. He very much Guild Wars. I did too once; but, I play Star Trek Online now. I left Guild Wars in 2007. Because, I didn't like what it has become.
However, he got another HP computer; he also has the HP 752N which he also wants to upgrade it. I didn't want to start a new thread. There is enough threads in the forum at this time.
I'm NOT sure which Graphic cards to choose and also unsure has if it supports AGP 8X. I have seen many AGP cards but, none of them gives any info if it got the AGP 4x.
We were looking at the GT 8400 GS. I were very unsure about that one. So, we didn't bought, well he didn't. I know a AGP Graphic card would be better for this old computer.
We need your help for that one. What do you recommends?
I'll await your reply.
Thank you

We have problems. First, I thought to begin with the installation of his new processor you suggested us.
We installed the E6600 @ 3.06ghz into his a1740n and nothing happens when powering up his computer; in fact, even the old CPU doesn't work anymore.
Can you help us? or Can someone help us?
Thank you.
