HP Repairs replaced my 2.83GHz processor with 2.40

[ Edited ]
I sent my month old Vista 32 Home Premium d5000t desktop to HP to have a RAM chip replaced.  When it was returned I found out the memory was fixed but my 2.83 Q9550 had been swapped for a Q6600.  HP technical support says they didn't touch the processor.  Is there a warranty seal on the box that can help me prove no one has tampered with the computer?  My receipt says I purchased a Q9550.

Seriously..it was sent in to replace a stick of RAM?  :smileyvery-happy:

If you have evidence of this, I would complain and demand a replacement....as the Q6600 has a  huge difference in FSB and cache..and etc.  As for a warranty seal...I doubt there's one, as most companies don't care about those because they have end-user replaceable/upgradeable parts.

Have you made sure it's your unit?  Is your data still there?  Do the serial numbers match up?

Yes, the computer is mine and I've spoken with HP most of the day and they are not budging on helping me.

My problem is getting the evidence.  HP just told me there are no warranty seals.  All my data was returned intact on the hard drive so I'm really at a loss as to how I can win this.  If the BIOS stored a history log, I would have a golden case.  As it is, I have just about exhausted any way to prove that my processor was changed under HPs watch.  Open to any suggestions.

If I get the evidence I will certainly file a claim.  Thanks.

Since your data is still there, you could try checking the Event Viewer to look for new hardware on the days it was away for service.  This link will show you the basics of using the Event Viewer.  You'll want to check System logs under the Windows Logs.

Thanks.  I tried your suggestion and have been scouring the Component Services log which has a trace hint of something that may be useful, however I can't interpret my findings.  For example, the PerfState code (about 50 characters long) changed under Kernel-Processor-Power Event ID 4 during the time HP had my computer vs. what the PerfState code was prior to my shipping my computer to HP.  This may be a question for a windows technician.  Regards.

Hmm.

Try calling the HP Corporate offices and speak to someone there, tell them that tech support isn't letting you send the PC back in to get the right processor (which is what the warranty provides for, not necessarily a PC replacement).  They should be able to figure something out.

Re: HP Repairs replaced my 2.83GHz processor with 2.40

Thanks for the suggestion. I was unsuccessful in reaching anyone that could help in HP Corporate - they wanted to route me back to my senior case manager in technical support. My lawyer is faxing a letter to legal dept describing the case. We'll be filing the claim in January if we don't hear of any resolution. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Mike
