HP Vs17e Monitor doesn't stay on?

I have a really old computer - I think it was originally Windows 98 and then I upgraded it to XP. Right now I am using a Sony Multiscan 200Es monitor and It just really takes up way too much space on the desk so I got an HP Vs17e monitor (2006). The problem is when I plugged it in, my desktop would pop up perfectly fine for about 2 seconds, displaying a small box saying something like "VGA input active and required: 1024 x 768 displayed: 1024 x 768" then it would just go black but the power button still remaining blue. Iv'e tried EVERYTHING.  Switched wires, updated drivers, switched display settings, restarted the computer, etc. And the wire that I'm using is not damaged or cut in any way and it works with other monitors. I really don't think my computer being "too old" is the issue because I used my Dell monitor on it from 2010 and it works properly but I got another computer so I now use the Dell one on the new one and gave the old one to my mum cause all she does is play Solitaire lol. PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE HELP!!! D:

Thought maybe you could use the correct driver, as you did not mention the install CD.
