Hey Big_Dave, yeah long threads from multiple users are OK if it is the same hardware.

In a nut shell, it means your hard drive has gone bad. It's gone!!! I experienced the same issue after i ran HP Diagnostic Tools Smart test after my hard drive failed to boot. It gave me the following message screen:
Error Code: BIOHD-8 (in red)
Error: A smart test failed on the hard drive
Suggestion: Backup your important data
Suggestion: Please contact HP support
After dealing with HP tech support, that was the news i got. So, i hope this helps anyone who experiences this issue and not spend countless hours trying to figure out what was wrong. Tech support was very helpful but, it took a lot of calls to get thru.

I received the same error message -- after running the diagnostic tool in an attempt to figure out what was going on with my HP desktop. <sigh>

I just solved BIOHD-8 problem on friends HP Compaq dx2420.
Hitachi HDD.
Downloaded Drive Fitness Test from http://www.hitachigst.com/suport/downloads , made CD image, boot with CD.
Quict test didn't return any errors, but advanced test did and continued with erase disc utilitie. After erasing advanced test - no errors, HP boot diagnostic - only BIOHD-3 (no boot).
Just installing Windows and everything seems fine.

You still have a failing hard drive.

What did this mean?
"HP boot diagnostic - only BIOHD-3 (no boot)."
