That's great news that the motherboard is not damaged. This damage to the heatsink is not common, but happens rarely. I would not hesitate on replacing it with the original HP heatsink.

The thermal paste should be applied only in a very thin layer, just enough to see if evenly spread just across the center of the heatsink.

Does that work?  or should I just stick to http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/HP,Computer,Part,51878413.aspx

Hello Bananriot, The first link shows the heatsink as the HP part number and at almost half the price.

That looks like the one I would purchase. It may come with some thernal paste. Some of these do. I have just always used Artic Silver Ceramic since the early days when AMD processors got so hot.

It does look a little different so I'm slightly concerned.  Do you think I should go for it anyways?

Hello Bananariot, It looks the same to me. You are looking at the top view on the web site and your photo is showing the bottom. The part number is the official HP part number.

Metal grating looks square and fan shape is circle in the picture, grating is circular and fan shape is square in the one I have.

Hello Bananariot, You are correct. Sometmes a manufacturer will upgrade their parts to a different looking part, and retain the original part number. I have seen this many times. The square fins appear they would disapate heat better than the round fins.

As long as the part number is the original one, I would not be worried about the difference in the fins. The mounts look the same.
