Have you tried:
<start>
<run>
Type "msconfig" <enter> (no quotes)
click the "startup" tab.
find the program in the list and un-check the box in front of it.
click "apply" and "ok" and reboot.
Once rebooted, a window will open. Check the box and click "ok".
or
<start>
<All Programs>
<accessories>
<run>
Type "msconfig" <enter> (no quotes)
click the "startup" tab.
find the program in the list and un-check the box in front of it.
click "apply" and "ok" and reboot.
Once rebooted, a window will open. Check the box and click "ok".
yet?

Steve

I have exactly the same issue with my 750g PMD, Autoplay is constantly finding it and have found nothing in my startup options in msconfig. mainly annoying because it wakes my pc up and screen saver doesn't seem to want to kick in, my fear of coarse is burn in.

I found my pmd in the device manager but did not see any thing that would affect my problem. In the autoplay options (blue link at bottom of window when it pops up) ther is an area at the bottom of the window that says that Devices that are connected to my pc should be listed here but the PMD is not listed, this is where I would expect to be able to tell Auto play what to do with it.

In the auto play options [Start -> Control Panel -> AutoPlay],
I unchecked the 'Use AutoPlay for all media and devices', while changing all other options to 'Ask me every time'.
Then saved changes.
This seemed to work.
Note: you can change any of the auto play options, to whatever, the next time an 'Ask me every time' is triggered.
I just did this, but I think it's the way to go - anyone see any problems?

HP, why not fix the problem. Stop treating the PMD as just another flash drive. Every time my computer wakes up, it AGAIN finds the NEWLY inserted drive which was never removed.
I escalate this problem to HP tech support and their solution was to disable autoplay. Took two days of buck passing to reach this brilliant conclusion. No attempt to actually fix the real problem which is to program a 'driver' for the PMD instead of relying on Micrsoft generic flash drive solution.

What worked for me:
Go to the control panel auto play screen:
Start -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Auto Play
There is a box in the top left corner: Use Auto Play for all Media and Devices
Uncheck this box
The setting you currently have the other devices will remain as is.
You will no longer get the PMD wake up notification (note: there is no box specially for the PMD)

Using Win7 and OS thinks that drive is 'pictures' because I have backup pictures on there. Options do not allow me to set 'do nothing' for that specific drive.
I don't want to turn off media autoplay. I use media cards, Compact Flash and SD, to download photos.
