Re: HP xw4200/4300

Hi,

The xw4200 and xw4300 have got PCI Express x16 slot for graphics. Though only Professional (Quadro / FireGL) cards are tested and certified to work on these, any PCI Express x16 compatible card will work fine.

However, if you are planning to use this workstation to run a commercial ISV application (Photoshop, Maya, CATIA, UG, Ansys ,....), I would strongly recommend a certified professional card. For an explanation and more details on this, please see http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro_geforce.html

Hope this helps.

Bests,

SK

Re: HP xw4200/4300

-I recently purchased an xw4300 with an nvidia 9600GT (PCI Express x16) video card to go with it. I was planning a low cost gaming machine for my (two) sons Christmas gift. The xw4300 gave me the "red" code light after the install and power-up of the card (won't even start boot). Sent the card back and received new one. The replacement did the same thing.

Though the Quadro 1400 video card (which it came with) works fine, I don't think it will enjoy high res game graphics. Any suggestions? The HP is from Geeks.com and is "refurbished". The spec's say it has a 460w power supply, but I don't think I'm qualified to test it.

Please help,

Tom-

Re: HP xw4200/4300

Does your 9600 come with additional power connector? Make sure you have connected the same if it is required.

Re: HP xw4200/4300

Thanks for the reply! The version of the 9600 card I bought is built by Evertop. I hadn't heard of them before, but the tech at geeks.com recommended the brand. There were no instructions, and nowhere in the readme file did it mention external power. Even the tech at geeks.com thought that pci-16 should at least power the card, but he couldn't find any notes that indicated hooking the card to the power supply. The tech did, however, wonder what the six-prong "thing" ,on the back of the card, was used for. I learned the truth from an nVidia forum. You see, the neither the nVidia or the Evertop web sites had any mention of hooking the 9600 card to the power supply. Yes, the nVidia Geforce 9600 needs a six-prong power cord from the computer. Amazingly, the xw4300 has one, and I didn't need to buy a 4-prong to 6-prong adapter. P.S. I just ran Resident Evil at 60fps and all the textures (ect.) turned on maximum. No problem!

HP xw4200/4300 Case Fan Size?

-Almost forgot. I now have the need for a good case fan, but have never spec'd or installed one. The xw4300 has room in the front, but I'm not sure how to find the size. HP only lists equipment that comes with the box. I guess posting a new question will be necessary. A search on the topic didn't seem to get results.  Tom-
