I would like to know what is the max. hard drive size for a Pavilion 873n, Pentium 4, running XP SP1 (to start). The present hard drive is 120GB and has errors and bad sectors. I would like to replace it with a hard drive of at least 500GB and after recovery, upgrade to SP3. I have the recovery discs. Will this older computer handle it? Thanks.

Some of the older PCs have issue with hard drives over 160 MBs. Review this post.

According to MS, if your original XP disks are SP1, your ready for drives larger than 137GB.
Caveat: By default, the original release version of Windows XP Home Edition and of Windows XP Professional do not have 48-bit LBA support. Your computer must meet the following requirements to use 48-bit LBA ATAPI support:
- 48-bit LBA-compatible BIOS.
- 137-GB hard disk or larger.
- You must have Windows XP SP1 installed.
How to test for 48-bit LBA compatible. http://www.48bitlba.com/winxp.htm

The main reason I mentioned the adapter is hard drive capacity versus cost. SATA drives are cheaper now than old technology EIDE drives, and have larger cache buffers.
