Hard drive won't stop running

Hello- I have an HP Pavillion a566n with a HP Pavillion f1903 monitor. I bought the computer back in 2001 or 2002. For the past week or so, the hard drive just runs & does not beep or make any kind of connection. The screen stays is sleep mode. There is a yellow battery light below the power button that is on. I read that it might be the CMOS battery needing to be replaced. I tried to replace the CMOS battery, but it did not solve the problem. Everything else works...modem, router, wi-fi. I opened the hard drive...it was a little dusty & I cleaned that out...still didn't solve the problem. Any suggestions as to why the hard drive just runs w/ no type of connection to the monitor would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

igsroc,

Welcome to the HP user forums. Interesting comments. Hopefully I can take them apart, and answer.

1)  HP Pavillion a566n with a HP Pavillion f1903 monitor. I bought the computer back in 2001 or 2002.

Actual circa is 2004:http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00187053&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...

2) For the past week or so, the hard drive just runs & does not beep or make any kind of connection.

Hard drives spin constantly. I think you mean it no longer boots. Hard drives made back then had 2-5 yr warranty. Newer drives now are 1-2 yr. (Shame that is the norm).

3) The screen stays is sleep mode.

Did you actually see a message? or do you assume it's sleeping.

4) There is a yellow battery light below the power button that is on.

That is usually the hard drive light. It normally flickers with drive access. (read / write)

5)  I read that it might be the CMOS battery needing to be replaced. I tried to replace the CMOS battery, but it did not solve the problem.

Good you replaced the battery. Did you reset the CMOS? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00062430&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...

6)  I opened the hard drive...it was a little dusty & I cleaned that out...still didn't solve the problem.

Hopefully you opened the computer case. Opening a physical hard drive would damage the sterile status.

The hard drive is attached to a flat ribbon cable to the motherboard.

KInd of stupid picture, as  it shows an open hard drive, but see for example of drive :

It really sounds like your hard drive has died. Your old drive was a 200 GB Ultra 100 DMA 7200 rpm.

Re: Hard drive won't stop running

Try chkdsk and see if it makes a difference. It shouldn't spin if idle. Is System recovery an option for you?

System recovery is not an option at this time. Thank you!

mithcd,

Another myth? Hard drives always spin unless:

Re: Hard drive won't stop running

I surmise it's the data your trying to protect.

You did not respond to each of my questions. So, let me suggest you verify the hard drive is salvageable.

Purchase an adapter, and check the drive:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002

You'll need to remove the hard drive, hookup the adapter, and attach to a host computer via USB.

After the host boots to the desktop, power up the adapter. It may take several minutes to acknowledge.

From that point, you can see if the drive is working, and move the data files to the host, or another external drive.
