Help with upgrading an old PC - HP dc5100s

Hi all,

I have an old dc5100s that I am planning on upgrading as a second PC.  I've looked all over the web, and the user guides and they state that this PC can take a Pentium 4 661 (3.6ghz).  I have now purchased two of these processors and the PC refuses to boot (POST beeps and blinking lights).  I have upgraded to the latest BIOS.  The second CPU was brand-new in shrink wrap, so I doubt that both of them were bad.

So - can this PC take a P4 661?  Or should I try another CPU?  Or am I doing something wrong (like a jumper or something - I'm guessing here...).

Did you verify the part number of the processor (not the specs) was the same as the part number recommended by HP?

Page 7 states it is supported.

If you do not have your BIOS updated to at least v1.08A, that is why your new processor is not working.

Here are the release notes for v1.08A

Enhancements
	Adds support for Intel Pentium 4 631, 641, 651, 661 Processors

You need to flash the BIOS to v1.08A and you may as well flash it to v1.09A

Warning:  Do not flash the BIOS with your antivirus program running!  Disable it or uninstall it. Failure to do this may result in your antivirus program attempting to interrupt the flash thinking a virus is attacking your BIOS. Interrupted flash = dead computer.

Make sure you select the BIOS version for the OS you are running.

Hello sternfan2011, The specifications you listed does show the Pentium 4 661 processor is supported for this system. The SFF shows a power supply of 240 watts and the Mini Tower (MT) shows a 300 watt power supply. I am not sure which system you have but that could possibly an issue if your system has the smaller capacity power supply. The Pentium 4 661 is a lower power CPU.

You might try resetting the BIOS and see if it will accept the newer Pentium 4 661 processor. You also need to insure that you have applied thermal paste to the top of the CPU, and the CPU heatsink fan is connected and running.

Just some thoughts.

• Bios is latest version - 1.09 - verified it again
• It is a SFF - looks just like the picture in the specs link above.
• I used fresh thermal paste on both P4-661 processors.  I changed the CPUs at work on a static mat (I am a network admin, work on PCs all the time)

The tragedy is that I don't have another LGA775 system to test the CPUs.  I visually checked the chips, no burn marks etc. 

The new CPU has written on it:

Hello sternfan2010, According to CPUZ, it does appear this CPU should work in your system.

You did mention that you verified the latest BIOS, but did you reset the BIOS after the installation of the new CPU?

Sometimes this is needed for the BIOS to recognize the new CPU.

Just something else to try.

How do you reset the bios?

Hi:

On the motherboard, near the coin cell, you should see a little yellow button.

Unplug every device from the PC including the mouse and keyboard, power cord etc.

Press the power button to drain any residual power from the system board.

Press and hold the little yellow CMOS button for 30 seconds.

Put everything back together.

CMOS settings will be cleared and you will have to enter the BIOS to reset the date and time.

If you don't have a yellow button (but I think you do) then just remove the coin cell battery for a minute or so doing all of the above first.
