How do i enable 8x agp on a 07e8h mobo?

while attempting to bring down the noise level of my gpu, i discovered that for some reason, ati tray tools is reporting my x1950 pro as running in 4x agp mode, with no option to run any faster. this is rather strange since bios is reporting that the agp slot is in 8x mode.

it actually explains a lot that the card is running slower than it should; i'm getting surprisingly bad performance playing some old games (dawn of war 1) and experiencing quite a lot of frameskipping playing 720p videos with hardware accelleration (via xbmc-11.0-dsplayer).

so, i have 2 questions:

how do i make sure my mobo is running in 8x agp mode and...

what is the best performance/price mobo i can get to exploit this gpu, combining a 3912q007 compaq case, 4 sticks of ram and a socket 478 (pentium 4... overclocking ability not tested) or socket a (xpm2500; very overclockable) cpu?


ideally, i really just want to be able to get this pc functioning as an htpc.

Hi,

If these are the specifications for your PC then you don't enable 8x as the AGP slot is only 4x.

 A home theater PC with your PC may not be practical with a 4x AGP slot.  And, you need at least a 800 mhz bus and ram to get HD video to play smoothly.

i was sure i saw 8x agp in the bios somewhere but it seems i was mistaken...

also, 800mhz fsb? that can't be right... are you sure you don't mean pc 800, aka 200mhz? i'd be plenty surprised if a 70 dollar set top box like a roku has a fsb of 800mhz.

Hi,

Yes you need to get a PC with a FSB and memory of at least 800 mhz to get smooth HD video.  Been there and done that.
