I need to hook up 2 monitors.

It's an hp pavilion h8-1214 and hp monitors. The guy at best buy also sold me a plug that plugs into hdmi on one end and needs one of the other plugs plugged into it but I don't know which one. I need a good explanation because I have no idea the difference in the cords or the name of them. Maybe a diagram or what color plugs in where.

Hi,

The critical bit of information is the type of video output each of your displays has.

Post a digital picture of  the end of each  cord from the displays or post the precise brand and model number of each display. There should be a sticker on the rear of the displays with that information.

Here is an image of the back of your PC at the video card rear. This is where you must connect both displays (monitors). 

The connection on the right (#2) is a DVI-D and on the left (#1) is HDMI. 

DVI-D connector is on the right and VGA connector is on the right

It's the hp 23 inch led flat panel monitor. Both are exactly the same

I have been using a dual diaplay setup for a few years now. I love having all that "real estate".

Use DVI-D for one display and HDMI for the other. These images are from the web support portal for your HP display.

What is your operating system?

Once you have them connected and have booted into Windows you can use AMD Vision Control Center to set up the default display.
