IMPORTANT Faulty Hard drive

I had a broken hard drive and when i called Tech. support, I was told that they would send me a new one, and I had to send my old one back so that they can see that it really is broken.  I have data on that hard drive that I need.  Why can't it be returned to me???

Re: IMPORTANT Faulty Hard drive

If it is really bad, then it is not going to do you much good.  You may or may not be able to get any data from it.  If they replace the drive under warranty, then you are not entitled to the old drive.  If you buy a replacement drive, then you are.  Also, if you buy a replacement drive, you may be able to rescue some data from the old drive before you send it back.  Look for a utility CD like this: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

or  http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page

to move data from the old drive.  You do not need the computer to operational other than the CD or DVD drive and your hardware, and of course a place to put the rescued data.  Once you get one of the mentioned CD's made, the computer will boot to the CD and then you can try to get to the data on the failed drive but no guarantee.
