IR Receiver cable question

My m9500m came with two IR related cables: An IR blaster and a "cable IR ext Wire Sidewinder" A.K.A  "IR Receiver cable."

So I can't find anything on the internet about a cable IR ext Wire Sindewinder and there wasn't any documentation either. My computer has a built-in IR receiver.

I spent several hours on the phone with HP agents trying to help me connect the cables. The blaster is plugged into the back of my cable set top box and the bulb  at the other end is over the cable box sensor. It is illuminated and bright red

Now here's where I need guidance. One end of the so-called  IR ext Wire Sidewinder cable --a red jack -- was plugged into the IR input on the back of my computer. The HP support agent was not familiar with the IR ext Wire Sidewinder and kept on asking me if the cable had a usb connector at one end.

Eventually,  she instructed me to bring the other end of the sidewinder to my cable box which is situated about 4 ft from my computer and stick the plastic bulb over the cable box sensor. I asked her if she meant it should be right next to the blaster bulb and she said yes. We went through TV set up again but the IR hardware was not detected. She decided the IR cable had 'gone bad' and arranged for me to receive another. So I have the new cable now. One sticker is labled   Cable IR ext wire Sidewinder (P/N 14G142006300H2). and a second sticker is labled IR Receiver cable (HP P/N492936-001).

Please, can anyone tell me what is the right configuration?  Has HP sent me the right part?  I'm very frustrated not being able to complete set up for the media center.

Thanks!
