Installing New HD

I have a HP Pc m7350n which I created recovery disks for when I purchased it. It has a 250GB HD. I would like to replace the existing HD with a larger one. It is my understanding that the recovery disks will place the drive back to the initial state of the PC . Can the recovery disks be used on a larger capacity HD?
