Installing a processor with an FSB 1066MHz on a MS-7525 (Boston) motherboard

Hi, I'm looking at doing a processor upgrade for my HP Pavillion A6522.ch. It came with an Intel Pentium E2180 FSB 800MHz and the upgrade notes say I can install an E7xxx so I want to install an E7600 FSB 1066MHz.

My questions are:

1. will the E7600 work ok with the MS-7525 (Boston) motherboard?

2. will the E7600 work ok with my current memory (DDR2 PC2-6400 (800MHz))?

3. can I replace this memory with DDR2-DIMM, PC2-8500 (1066MHz)?  The upgrade notes states only PC2-6400.

Thanks for any responses!

Simon

Re: Installing a processor with an FSB 1066MHz on a MS-7525 (Boston) motherboard

Hi, Simon:

It would be hard to say unless someone on the forum has the same motherboard and installed an E7600.

I have my concerns based on the timelines of the introduction of the processors and the lack of any BIOS updates for your PC that add support for newer processors.

When you look at the product specs for your PC, it was introduced in July of 2008.

I have taken the E7400, E7500 and E7600 processors, and compared them for you at the link below.

http://ark.intel.com/compare/36500,36503,41495

As you can see from the comparison chart, the only processor of the three that was introduced before your PC came out was the E7400.

So, I would say that the E7400 would work, but the E7500 and E7600 processors are very questionable.

If you are looking for a processor that supports virtualization technology, one sSpec of the E7400 does support VT.  Just get the one with sSpec SLGW3.

Memory:  Good question. I highly doubt that the PC2-8500 will run at the full 1066 MHz. even thought the processor would allow it.  If it could the upgrade specs should have listed it as an option.

thx for your feedback Paul and the comparison chart. I thought someone would know for sure but I guess it might not have been done before. I'll probably take your advice and go for the E7400 and not oush it too far. Thanks again, simon

Hi Selhurstboys,

Did you have a chance to upgrade your processor? I am planning to do the same, wanted to check if yours was successful.

What processor did you end up installing?
