Installing additional SATA Drive in h8-1240t

I have just purcahsed a new H8-1240T with solid state C drive and a 500G SATA second HD.  I have an internal 500G SATA  HD from an older computer which was additional storage and want to add it to the H8-1240t.  The computer has the necessary power, bay and spare SATA plug on the mother board.

Just pluggung it in does not work.  I assume that a Jumper needs to be changed so that the computer will recognize what will be the G: Drive. 

As now set up:

C:\ = SSHD

D:\ = HP_RECOVERY

E:\  = SATA 500G HD

F:\  = DVD R/W

Where is the Jumper I need to change and to what configuration.

I am not a novice.  My first computer was an IBM AT w/ 256K RAM in stacked 128K chips and I have been upgrading my computers with each generation.

Hi, there, and thanks for writing to the forum. 

I'm assuming your extra SATA drive was working correctly in the PC you salvaged it from.  If that's the case, when you install it into the Pavilion and turn it on, is the drive getting power?  Can you hear it spinning-up?

If so, there are a couple of things to check.  If you're running drives in a RAID arrangement, you'll need to press <CTRL-I> at boot to get into (and configure) the Intel RAID utility.  This is one area where you'll see (or not see) your added drive.

If not using RAID, check two other areas.  First, check the Disk Manager to see if the drive is recognized.  If not, go to device manager to see if there are any drive entries (or any other HW items) that have issues.  These are typically denoted with an exclamation point.  If you find an issue, open it to see what the problem is (missing driver, etc.).

One final thing to try:  Temporarily replace your existing SATA data drive with the one you're trying to add, using the existing power and data plugs, just to see if the PC can see it.  This will at least eliminate a defective drive possibility.

WS3, welcome to the forum.

Did you connect the data cable (SATA Interface cable), as well as, the power cable?  There should be two cables connected to the drive.  Most SATA drives from the past 5 years, come with the jumper set to Cable Select from the factory and don't need to be changed.

SATA drives don't need jumpers like IDE drives do in that sense. If you do have a jumper on a SATA drive, it is for backwards compatibility issues or troubleshooting, but not for plugging in multiple drives. Have you checked in Computer Management in Windows to see if lists it there?

Checked two things so far.  The drive is powering up but the new computer does not recognize the old SATA HD.  Tried unplugging the secondary SATA HD and plugging it into the same motherboard receptical.  NO JOY.  The next thing is to switch SATA cables.  Then if that does not work put it back to test it to make sure the act of removing it did not cause it to crash.  Even if it crashed the new computer should recongnize it.  A puzzle which I will put off until the weekend.  Unless someone has the answer.

Remove the jumper and see if that helps.  It might be stapping the drive to SATA I.

Hit the esc key then F10 to enter the bios (setup).  Then go to the Storage drop down and select Device Configuration.  Do you see the hard drive that you just installed?  If no, then you might have a hardware issue.

If you do see the hard drive then boot up all the way into Windows.

Now go to Computer Management ---> Disk Management and fully expand the screen.  Do you see the drive?
