About a month ago, I bought an HPE h8-1360t I7-3770 which had 8G memory installed.

The product is described here:

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.aspx?sku=067371

It has Windows 7 professional 64Bit.   So far, no change to the hardware or software.

My question is, what is the maximum memory that can be installed.

According to the motherboard specification page,  "Supports 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB DIMMs" - "Supports up to 32 GB on 64-bit systems"

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03132942

But according to the Upgrading and Servicing Guide, "16.0 GB maximum installable memory using 4GB Modules."

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c03132942&lc=en&product=52616...

The models mentioned in the upgrade and  servicing guide is not the exact model but it sure looks the same.   And, the motherboard, IPMMB-FM, sure looks like the correct motherboard.

So, which is the maximum memory that this machine can take?  If it is only 16GB, then is the motherboard specification page incorrect?  And if the motherboard page is correct, and the machine nevertheless is limited to 16GB, what is limiting the maximum memory, if not the motherboard?

Hi,

The IPMMB-FM (Formosa) motherboard in your PC does support 32 GB.

I suspect the documentation was published before HP started offering 8 GB dimms desktop PCs.

The some of the similar model PCs using the same motherboard can be configured up to 32 GB using 8 GB dimms.

HP ENVY 6055, HP Deskjet 1112
HP Envy 17", i7-8550u,16GB, 512GB NVMe, 4K screen, Windows 11 x64
Custom PC - Z690, i9-12900K, 32GB DDR5 5600, dual 512 GB NVMe, gen4 2 TB m.2 SSD, 4K screen, OC'd to 5 Ghz, NVIDIA 3080 10GB

I sure hope you're right.  32GB gives me the elbow room I want.  However, there is widespread dissemenation  of the 16GB limit.  Here at Crucial it is showing 16GB as the limit.

http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/HP+-+Compaq-memory/Pavilion+HPE+Series/Pavilion+HPE+h8-1360t-upgrades...

I would think that if the memory capacity had changed HP would have changed the model number.    I've read a few posts of people upgrading to 16 GB on the assumption that was the maximum limit.   Myself, I don't want to buy a 4 GB stick if it'll take 8GB.  Conversely, I don't want to buy an 8GB stick if it'll only take 4GB.

Hi,

You must have a very heavy application or perhaps multiple VMs to actually use all 32 GB.  Most users can get buy quite well with just 8 GB.

If you plan on going to 32 GB then buy a kit containing four 8GB dimms from a manufacturer that will give you a refund if it doesn't work.  Review the outrageous cost for 32 GB on the HP h8-1520t.

It has 2 sticks of 4GB right now.  I was kinda hoping to get 2 sticks of 8GB for a total of 24GB.   And yes, it is for VMs.

Just be sure to match up the specifications of the new dimms with the existing dimms to avoid issues.

I just purchased a h8-1360t online from HP with 8G of RAM (2 4G SIMMS) and tried to upgrade to 24G by adding 2 8G RAM from Corsair. It didn't work the computer would not even turn on. I removed the 2 4G SIMMs and tried the 2 8G SIMMs in the original 4G SIMM slots and the compouter still did not power up. It would turn on and than 20 seconds later would turn off. Installed the orignal 2 4G SIMMs and luckly the computer still works. There must be some limitation of intalling a SIMM that has 8G in one slot.

I was the original poster for this question. I marked the issue solved based on the answer given. I've not actually tried upgrading the memory yet. I don't see a way to mark this issue as "unsolved". I'm wondering if it has a BIOS that is arbitrarily limiting the RAM. Typing "msinfo32" into a command prompt, I'm seeing a BIOS of AMI 7.15 7/2/2012. I'm going to go slow on this one.

A search shows this post http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/326506-30-upgrade-question-32gb Looks like a model h9-1315t, but has the same motherboard, IPMMB-FM. Says he went with Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800).

I also recently purchased the HPE h8-1360t (it hasn't arrived yet), and had the same question on the max RAM for the system [mine is shipping with 10GB of DDR3 PC3-10600 RAM - two 4GB modules and one (bonus) 2GB module].   Unlike an earlier post on the topic, my search on 7/1/13 using Crucial website's Memory Advisor resulted in the advisor identifying the system supporting a maximum of 32GB memory with 4 slots.  The compatible memory includes DDR3 PC3-12800 and DDR3 PC3-10600.  Crucial's "recommended upgrade" is a 16GB kit (8GB x 2) of DDR3 PC3-12800 for $125.99.  The same kit for DDR3 PC3-10600 is the same price.
