HP Compaq 8100 Elite CMT
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hi there. I am new around here.

Based on the spec sheet found at   QuickSpecs,  I recently bought 2x4GB of "TwinMos PC3 10600  4GB DDR3 1333 Mhz CL9 U-DIMM" memory. The chip configuration is 512x8 single sided. When I put the memory inside, my PC will only boot upto the Windows logo and keeps on rebooting. I have tried both modules together and separately, filling black DIMM1 slot always. But the problem persists.

After numerous searches on the internet, i found suggestion that it could be becuase of the 512x8 chip configuration.

Is there such an issue? How can I resolve this problem. I am planning to uprade to max 16GB and this is the only 4GB DDR3 1333MHz available around here.

Thank you for your time.

Hi:

This is the memory I used on my 8000 Elite which uses the same memory spec...

This memory has 8 little black chips on each side of the board (16 in total).

I would say that the memory you bought is too high a density for the PC to handle.

The memory I bought works just fine in my box.

I reckon that is the issue. I am trying to get the double sided 16 chip version now. Hopefully it would work. I tried the 512x8 on another Intel (DH55TC) machine without any success ( showed the same symptoms).

Yes, I had gone thru one of your other posts where you mentioned the GSkill RAM. If only I had  come here earlier....

Anyway thanks for your reply. Will keep posted of the outcome.

You're very welcome.

HP PC's are very finnicky about the memory density.

I await your favorable reply after you get what I think will work.

What actually baffles me is that it says the following on the tech specs:

http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02034672

section 3.3

"

These systems support memory modules with the following parameters:

■ Unbuffered, compatible with SPD rev. 1.0

■ 512-Mb, and 1-Gb memory technologies for x8 and x16 devices

■ CAS latency (CL) of 5 or 6 (depending on memory speed)

■ Single or double-sided

■ Non-ECC memory only

"

Will it be the probelm  with CAS latency, since the one I bought has CL 9.

Now I am really apprehensive about buying another 256x16 4GB RAM.

Anyhow, I am putting the upgrade on hold for now.

Thanks for all the support.

Hi:

All I can tell you is what worked for me.

Those specs can't be correct, because the faster the memory, the higher number latency there is.

What's being quoted there seems more along the lines for the latency of DDR2 chips.

Also incorrect is the listing of a max module of only 1 GB

Even the quickspecs, page 8 shows support for 4 GB memory modules.

Hi,

In the quickspec sheet it recommends third party 4GB modules with 'VH638AA' part number. I bought the same from Amazon recently .

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002X92ZM2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Unfortunately that doesn't work either!!!

Or is it that when we use 4GB modules all the four slots should be filled ???

I was just testing with only two slots filled....

I am completely lost now!!!!

One would believe that if you got memory  with an equivalent part number, it would work.

It shouldn't matter how much memory you put in there.

If you put a 4 GB chip in the black (1st) slot and a 4GB chip in the 3rd slot, it should have worked.

Again...I can only go back to what I know worked for me, and I gave the same recommendation to this forum member with an 8100 Elite just like yours, and it worked for him too.

Unless you can't get this memory where you live, you may want to take my advice and give it a try, don't ya think?

WOW!!!!

Paul you are a life saver.  The best piece of advice I had in a long time.

The G.Skill memory worked like charm!

Alas, only if I had remembered your advice before spending all that money.

Anyways, thanks a million man.  Now I know who to turn to for all things HP.

This forum has been a great support in this ordeal and thanks to all the help that even after a sizeable dent in my purse I finally succeeded.

Thanks all.:smileyvery-happy::smileyvery-happy::smileyvery-happy:

You're very welcome.

All I can say is put the memory up for sale on eBay.   :generic:
