Model # a6550d Shuts down But power light is still on

Hello everyone,

My computer bought 08-28-2008 has shut down two times now with the power light on the computer still on. No keyboard, Mouse still works, blank screen. The only way I can get it to work again is to shut it down and start it up using the F11 key for system restart then go to system restore. this last time it corruped the data and I had to do a scan of the disc drive. it came back with something wrong with the root all it said was root 1. error.  I am 65 years old and taught my self how to build my own computers But I bought this one and it still is under warranty I did a search and found one person with a problem almost the same on laptops that should have been posted to this forum. Please help if you can.

Did you apply the latest BIOS update?

Yes I up dated the bios when I first got the computer. I might add that when bought, it had Nero6 and HP photosmart on it both not compatable with vista windows I had to remove both from the computer (Both froze the computer when I tried to use them.)

Yes I have I just did it again and ran all Hardware and Diagnostic tools with every test ok. I also burned a copy of the HDT in case it happens again.

Have you gone thru the HP power supply trouble shooting steps?

Have you checked for any loose cables inside the computer?

Have you checked for any visible damage to the motherboard?

How hot does the CPU get? bios or SIW.exe will show the temp

Another one that I don't know how to do. I couldn"t find SIW.exe on my computer
