Hello saltyern, Usually this Failure relates to the hard drive starting to fail. I would backup my data as soon as possible, and consider replacing the hard drive as soon as possible.
You should either have or already made a set of HP Recovery Restore disk for your system that can be used to restore the software should you replace the original hard drive.

Thanks. I contacted HP support, they had me run the SMART test from bios and tell them the result. I have 6 days left on my warranty so they are sending me a new hard drive. Again many thanks.

I too ran a monthy test and recieved a smart short self test error. I was informed (mainly by this forum and HP also) to buy another $500 HDD. I rather recovered my system to factory image and do NOT have the error message nor have to spend big money.
This fix my be temporary--or not. But for now I'm good.
