Motherboard Problem (IPIBL-LA (Berkeley) (HP m9077c Pavilion)

Problem with motherboard powering in.  Does NOT power on when shorting the "power-on" pins on the motherboard.  Though, shorting the grn & blk (gnd) pins in the 24-pin atx plug works fine.  Any suggestions on repairing the "power-on" pins.

Hello wiredawg2011, Shorting the power supply green to black pins just allows the power supply to be activated (turned on).

 

If the motherboard has the power supply connected to it and the PWR pins on the motherboard are connected for a small period of time, the motherboard should do something if it is not faulty.

 

If there are no memory modules installed, you should get some beep codes. If everything on the motherboard that is requied to be is installed, except for the hard drive, you should get a black screen after the POST of the system.

 

From your description, it appears you may have a faulty motherboard.

Hi,

 

This is one way to test the power supply by a leading manufacturer.  Notice the fan as a loading device.

 

Another way is to use a power supply tester such as these from Thermaltake.

 

In the end, you might want to take the PC into a competent PC repair shop where they have power supply and motherboard testings tools.
