On my HP Pavilion a1720n desktop computer, my Samsung optical disc drive stopped reading +RW discs.

So I reinstalled the Nero software that came with the disc drive, installed the latest updates from Samsung, and it still would not read +RW discs.  Ther was no trouble reading +R discs or audio discs. I got a replacement disc drive free from Samsung, but the problem persists, so it is likely not the disc drive that is at fault. Does anyone have any ideas on how to restore readability of +RW discs on my Pavilion a1720n computer?

Norman, welcome to the forum.

Have you checked to see if there is a firmware update available for the drive?  This may help solve your problem.  Also, I suggest trying CDBurnerXP to see if it helps.  It is not related to WinXP, it is a separate company.  Most problems like the one that you are having is caused by software.

Thanks for the reply. My apologies for not getting back to you sooner as I have been busy lately. I did check and install the latest firmware updates, but that did not help. No, I have not tried the XP software that you mentioned. Is it reliable? Is there a cost to download it? Norman

Thank you for your suggestions. I viewed the information in the link and have implemented part of it. I cannot find MSfix on my computer. Is it something that I can download for free from Microsoft? Also, I have not found the filter section that is in the link. I did uninstall Roxio that I do not use (to my knowledge). The problem persists. Hi, I installed MS Fixit, but it did not automatically fix my readability problem. I deleted the software for the ODD and restarted the computer, which reinstalled the correct software, but that did not fix the problem. I did a search for regedit at the Start, but no items matched my search request. I am stuck. Any other ideas? Norman

Hi, I've now had time to devote to this problem. I downloaded the CDburnerXP, restarted the computer, but still it will not read +RW discs. I know the discs are not empty, as I can read them in another computer. Have you any other ideas? Norman
