Re: P6214y PCI Express Graphics Slot?

Ok, here's my update (if pics don't work, let me know. I can't see them from work).

Purchased the p6214y from Best Buy. Pretty good computer out of the box, and HP looks to have cut down on the crapware they send with their computers. Once I got it, I ran the tech power up graphics utility on the integrated card and got this:

Then I opened it up. Here's the view of the inside before adding the card:

I ordered the HIS Radeon 4670 (1GB) from newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161287&Tpk=HIS%20H467QS1GH

It installed as easy as could be, with plenty of space to work with (though it did take up a second PCI-E x1 slot):

Booted back up and the system automatically detected and switched to the card. I didn't have to change any BIOS settings. Then I ran the graphics utility again:

As you can see, it's definately a PCI-E Express 2.0 interface, so I was happy.

After installing a few drivers and programs, I ran WoW in a spot where the old computer always lagged horribly (lots of people) and would get about 4-9 fps on the lowest settings. On the new computer, still at low settings, it ran at 50-55 fps, then at all high settings ran at 20-25 fps, easily playable and which I thought was pretty **bleep** good considering the price of the card and not having to upgrade the PSU.

All in all, a hell of a good deal from BB and a great card for well under $100.

would you explain how you stayed using the same PSU coz the system requirement for video card need 400 Watt or greater power supply (550 Watt for ATI CrossFireX technology in dual mode) is recommended ???

drsaog,

Well, for starters I'm not running in dual mode. The card itself didn't have any secondary pin connectors to connect directly to the PSU (that I could find), so it only runs off the bus interface as far as I could tell. I didn't see a requirement for 400W, and I know other users have shown success with this card with only 300W. I believe this particular card is designed to run at relatively low power, which is part of the reason I chose it.

[Update]

Ah, ok, I see now newegg lists the power requirement at 400W (that wasn't listed at the time of purchase). Well, at this point it's all installed and working and shipped off to the user (I was building it for a family member) so it's too late now. I guess under the right maximum load conditions the PSU could shut off (?), but at this point I'll take a wait and see approach. If he seems to have trouble with it, or it constantly shuts off or runs hot or something, then I'll replace the PSU.

Re: P6214y PCI Express Graphics Slot?

Temporal,

Will you keep me updated on how that card is running? That is the exact card I am looking at getting, and I don't want to end up having to upgrade the PSU to make the card work... Because if I have to upgrade to a bigger PSU I might as well jump to the 4800 series.

Thanks a bunch!

Re: P6214y PCI Express Graphics Slot?

As an FYI...there are a ton of tests around the Web, and other forums, pointing to the 4670 as the maximum performance choice for systems with a 300w power supply...the recent mentions of a 400w need are new to a card that's been on the market for years prior.

Re: P6214y PCI Express Graphics Slot?

Been reading this thread since the day it came about, and like all of you i was looking for the best card/psu setup i could afford.and like temporalsword i bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161287 but after some research at the http://www.hisdigital.com/ website and  http://www.hisdigital.com/us/product2-476.shtml.  They actually have the power req. in red. 400w or 550 in crossfire.
