Partition the HDD

Hi I have a HP P6630uk it is a real pain in the **** less than 12 months old & i need to reinstall windows for the third time! due to the very slow boot up times & locking Hp keep telling me there is nothing wrong with a 6-8 minute bootup time???

My question is can i partition the HDD (750gb installed) & what would happen when i do a restore to factory defaults??

I cannot store anything on the hdd due to having to find storage for it every Two to three months?

Any advice would be helpful

Thanks

Assuming that when the Recovery DVD set is used now it works OK, I see no problem with making the existing C:\ partition smaller, if that is the question.  GParted can do that quite easily: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php  Make Live version, either USB or CD and boot to that, remake the partition size and then use the extra space for whatever.

Re: Partition the HDD

Hi Yes sorry I did not explain it to well!

As standard I have C:smileysurprised:S & D:HP_RECOVERY (both on the same HDD)

Now due to the unreliability of HP PCs (well all the ones I've had) I cannot use the C: to store Data!

As I said this is the third time of a full restore in less than 12 months!

What I would like to do if possible is to partition C: & use the C: as the OS & the new drive created for Data storage!

What I need to know is, if I use the Restore to factory defaults (either the DVDs or the backup on the HDD) will this format the new "Data" partition (it does on my sons Dell PC)

if it does it will be a complete waste of time! & begs the question why do manufactures put large drives into PCs with the OS on?

I hope this explains it better

Thanks

Re: Partition the HDD

I understand the question, now.  However, I do not know the answer, as I have no experience with that particular concern.  I suspect the only way to know for that would be to try an experiment with a disk that only had test data on it, or make a clone of the present drive and try it on the clone.  You want to use the Recovery DVD set or the Recovery Partition in a manner that it was not intended.  I suspect the process will reformat the whole hard drive if the option to do a factory recovery is initiated.
