Pavilion Elite e9220y - I am unable to move the Wireless LAN card to a different PCI slot.

I need to move the Atheron Wireless LAN card up to the next PCI slot so that I can install a new Radeon 6770 GPU. However, when I move the LAN card to either of the other to slots, the PC will begin to boot but then give a blank screen with a green bar at the top. If I move the LAN card back to the bottom slot, it will boot fine and allow me to log into Windows.

Any ideas would be appreciated, I've tried all I know to do.

Thanks.

Other Specs:

Windows 7 64

AMD Phenom II X4 910

8gb RAM

Motherboard - H-RS880-uATX (Aloe)

Hi,

The motherboard in the e9220y doesn't have a PCI slot only PCI-E slots.

Try clearing the CMOS after the card is moved.  The specifications indicate that the PCI-E x1 slots can be used for a network card.

The bottom slot is commonly used for the network card. That slot is designated J6 on the Aloe motherboard.

The PCI-E x16 slot  (J3) is to be used for video cards.

My advice is to leave the card in J6.

Re: Pavilion Elite e9220y - I am unable to move the Wireless LAN card to a different PCI slot.

Big-Dave, Thanks for the input, I've now cleared the CMOS by moving the blue jumper after moving the card to the next slot up from J6. However, when I rebooted, it did the same thing - blank screen with green bar at the top. Unfortunately, I can't keep the wireless card in J6 because the new GPU covers that slot due to being thicker than the previous GPU. Simply put, I either need to be able to move the LAN card to one of the other two PCI-E slots on the motherboard, or find a riser/ribbon so that I can move its physical position and still have it plugged into J6. I would certainly rather just move it the next slot up, and I can't imagine why it won't work. Is it possible I need to "activate" the other PCI-E slots, or maybe need to check the IRQ, or reassign the address for the card to a new slot? Thanks much.

Hi,

Leave the network card in J6.  J6 is the end slot.  You don't need to move it when installing a video card J3 (PCI-E x16 slot).

Are you getting to the HP splash screen?

Re: Pavilion Elite e9220y - I am unable to move the Wireless LAN card to a different PCI slot.

Thanks much for illustrating the slots on the diagram. I couldn't clearly read it when I looked on the website. Here's the problem, the card is in J3 and won't work in the other two (J6 & ?). Sorry about the confusion, but you can see how I can't fit a new GPU in that is thicker than the old one and use the J3 slot. No, I do not reach the HP splash screen. The only "normal" boot screen I see before the screen goes blank with the green bar at the top is the screen that shows the status of the DDR / storage. It also will not allow me to press F10 to reach the BIOS menu.

Re: Pavilion Elite e9220y - I am unable to move the Wireless LAN card to a different PCI slot.

Hi,

The wireless card for e9220y normally is in slot J6 when the PC is shipped from HP.  Was your PC changed or modified since it shipped from HP?

Do you have any other network cards installed in the PC such as in the mini-PCI-E slot?

Use a flashlight and carefully inspect the PCI-E x1 slots for damaged connector pins.

Yes, I just found out that the retail store (Best Buy) that I bought the PC from had indeed moved the card from J6 to J3. Why? IDK. No, I don't have any other card installed. But whether or not the card is originally in J3 or J6 shoudln't matter, should it? I would think the card could be placed in any of the three matching slots with no problem.

Hi,

BB moved the card? It's time to ask BB why?  Bad slots? Card issue?

I agree, in the meantime I've decided to switch to a USB adapter so that I can proceed forward. Thanks much for your help.
