Pavilion a700n does not recognize SATA hard drive

Hi there,

I had the original 80GB IDE (PATA) hard disk die on the a700n that the kids use and put in a 500gb SATA drive that I know works fine (tested on 2 other systems).  The a700n does not see the SATA disk and I can't install Windows on it.

Anyone else have this issue or heard of anyone that had it and got it corrected?

Thanks....Damir

Re: Pavilion a700n does not recognize SATA hard drive

Hello DamirB, I would make sure the Sata cable is connected to the proper port. Your system has 2 sata ports. Port 1 is located closest to the bottom of the motherboard, but does not necessarily mean this is the port to connect the sata hard drive to. On some HP systems, the boot drive has to be set to the port closest to the chipset. You might try connecting it to another sata port. Make sure the sata data and the power cables are both connected properly. Some of these are easily improperly connected and looks as though they are properly connected.

Enter the BIOS and see if the sata drive is recognized in the BIOS.

Damir,

If HANS' suggestions do not solve your problem then it might be that the hard drive is too big.

Some of these older PCs may also require a hard drive DMI tattoo before the HP recovery disks will work. This probably is not your situation since your are using a Windows 7 installation disk.  I noticed that your PC is not certified by HP for Windows 7.  That doesn't mean that Window 7 will not work but you may have to find device drivers.

I do believe the answer is in the lack of Sata support in the XP OS (dated 2004).  Although the MOBO supplied two Sata ports,  It only had IDE as reference. You'll need to read these articles.

I just checked the BIOS screens and found that it has a setting:

Onboard PATA/SATA Configuration

You might try entering the BIOS and see if there is anything in this section that would allow a sata drive to be recognized.

Re: Pavilion a700n does not recognize SATA hard drive

I have the same problem.  I'm trying to put a 80 gig SATA in an a700n.  I have tried both ports and it's not recognized.  My BIOS does NOT have any option for PATA/SATA Configuration.  I have flashed it to Ver 3.15
