Pavilion p6130y processor upgrade. AMD Phenom II 945 ?

I currently have the Pavilion p6130y with the M2N78-LA (Violet) motherboard with socket AM2+ (940).  The currrent processor is AMD Phenom X4  2.4GHZ Quad core 9750 Agena 95w with 16gb Memory.  The website upgrade states 9850 Agena 2.5GHZ 95w.  Upgrading to this processor is not worth it as there is not much difference between the 2.4 and 2.5 benchmarking.  I am reluctant to buy a new machine because this one is excellent, no issues, however when I have project work it is a bit slow in ACAD.

I have reviewed the AMD Phenom II 945 3.0GHZ Quad core 95w processor.  Will this processor work in this motherboard?  The part in non-returnable-non-refundable, so I am reluctant to buy.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi,

I don't believe the processor you are suggesting will work if it's not listed as an upgrade option.  Your current Motherboard has an AM2+ processor socket and DDR2 Memory Controller, whereas the AMD Phenom II 945 3.0GHZ Quad core is designed for an AM3 Motherboard with a  DDR3 Memory Controller.  AM3 processors will work in an AM2+ socket, but as it's not listed as an upgrade option, I would hesitate spending  money on it, especially as it's non-returnable.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
