I can connect the computer to my home network and internet using the wired LAN port or the wireless adapter. However, if I use the wired LAN port, I cannot load certain internet sites. For example, Yahoo.com and yahoo mail fail to load the web pages and time out when I use the wired LAN port. Some web sites load normally, others just fail to load and time out.
The wired LAN connection behaves this way irregardless of the status of the wireless LAN adapter - the same internet connection problem occurs if the wireless is enalbled and connected or wireless is disabled or uninstalled.
If I disable the wired LAN adapter and connect to my wireless router using the built in wireless LAN, web pages including Yahoo.com and yahoo mail load without problems.
I've disabled and uninstalled the wireless adapter, reset IE9, unloaded Webroot AV, reset my wireless router, disabled firewalls, and reset my DSL modem - all to no avail. The OS is Win7 64 bit Home Premium. I've also tried Google Chrome with the same issues.
I would prefer to use the wired LAN adapter rather than the wireless.
BTW, the new HP replaces a XP Pro computer that used the same wired LAN connection without issues.
What am I missing? This has me stumped...
Is it possible to connect using the wired LAN port and not use the wireless adapter? Thanks.

It should work OK. I have heard of some weird issues like this resolved by replacing Westel DSL modems with a fresh Westel modem from the DSL vendor - but not sure if this is the case here.
Sometimes, setting the LAN connection between the PC and the router to go from auto-speed sensing to a fixed speed (for instance, 100Mbps or 1Gbps - if that is an option on your router) makes a difference Usually there is something in the device properties for the adapter to force this - there may be something corresponding on the router as well.

Thank you for the reply. I think you're correct in that it is likely a problem with the DSL modem.
I ended up finding a solution that works although not quite sure why. Under the Internet Options/Connections tab I had to install a new connection, and setup the broadband connection similar to a modem and choose 'always dial the default connection' option.
I'll check with my DSL provider for instructions and firmware update.

Interesting - I knew you used to have to do that when direct wired - but thought all the newer DSL modems are "always on", etc. I wouldn't have thought you'd have to do that at all if your PC was connected to DSL on the back end of a wireless router. Perhaps if you are going through a router, there is some sort of equivalent setting for the router to do the dialing/connecting for you.
I've got Comcast here at home - for the most part - it works quite well, but lately I've noticed it seems to drop connections from time to time. I just took a splitter out of the line - hopefully that makes the difference for me.
