Presario SR2011WM will not boot

I am trying to boot up a Compaq Presario SR2011WM and it will not boot at all. No fans are spinning and the green light on the front just blinks once when I press it. I followed this guide: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph06788&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3292424

Though it did not really help out. Any ideas anyone?

Re: Presario SR2011WM will not boot

Hi, two times I had my desktops do exactly that, and both times, replacing the power supply fixed the issue.

Re: Presario SR2011WM will not boot

Well in the first place, I did not totally clean the computer out in a safely matter. I pretty much used a normal philips to unscrew the screws on the cpu heatsink and fan so I could blow all the remaining dust out. I took the computer outside and blew the dust out, but I'm sure that no moisture got into the case. I dont know if you must put more thermal paste onto the cpu everytime you take the cpu heatsink off but, I didnt do that. I also didnt ground myself when doing anything to this computer. Though I've done this multiple times with other computers and had no problem. Though this computer specifically had tons of dust in it. So by following that guide thats on the HP/Compaq website itself to diagnose the problem, the power supply did not show any problems, the green light stays on when the power thingy is plugged in. So I dont know if spending another $80? would be worth it because what if its something else like the motherboard that is having a problem. Any more ideas?.

Re: Presario SR2011WM will not boot

If you removed the processor from the board you will need to replace the thermal grease. As far as the suggestion of trying the power supply,it's cheaper and you can always return it if that's not the problem. Were you certain the cpu fan was running after cleaning it out?

What else have you tried?

Remove and reinstall the memory, cmos battery, video card(if not onboard),etc. Make sure it is unplugged.

Re: Presario SR2011WM will not boot

Hi,

Sometimes clearing CMOS will fix the problem you are having. The suggestions given in the preceding post are wise to follow in isolating the problem.

In some small computer shops (not BestBuy or Circuit City or the like) the techs can be quite  helpful in isolating power supply problems. Theyjust  plug in one of their own PSUs. The green light is not a guarantee that your power supply is good.

Eric

Re: Presario SR2011WM will not boot

Well I did buy thermal greese, and I didnt know that you have to replace the greese everytime you take the cpu off the motherboard, depending how long in between you put the greese on last I guess. I think I might try replacing the power supply, but down the road. This is only because I really dont have proper tools like de-magnetized tools specifically for dismantling computers. I did not put more thermal greese on the CPU after I took the heatsink off blew the dust out, screwed it back onto the motherboard, and I have done this before and have had no problems but from now on I'll only use the right tools and replace the greese when needed. What is the most gentle way to clean dust out of a computer, is it ok to use a vacuum? (though I never tried cus I thought it could harm something). I'll have to try the things you suggested dmhoo29 once I receive the proper tools in the mail, ordered some for $40 off tigerdirect.ca

Thanks for the tips so far everyone, its all helping.

Re: Presario SR2011WM will not boot

Did you get it running?

A can of compressed air works well.Just remember when using it to hold it upright.Tilting the can can cause some moisture to spray out. Also hold down any fans. The air can spin them faster than the required speed and can cause them to malfunction.Grounding yourself with the proper device also helps when working on the p.c..Static charge can occur more from touching the p.c. after turning it off more than touching it after walking around the house.Give it a chance to cool off. Those power supplies build up lots of charge.

Hi,

Wow.:smileysurprised: You have no idea how lucky you were that you didn't smoke check your Processor. You must be one of those people who win the lottery twice. Not cleaning off the old thermal interface material and installing the proper amount of thermal grease is usually the kiss of death to a PC.

You can bleed off the voltage in your power supply by unplugging the power connector at the back of your PC and then holding in the power button for a couple of seconds. Unless you do that you will notice that the green led on your motherboard stays lit when you turn off your PC. You only need to do this if you are removing components (i.e.memory modules) that are connected to your motherboard.

Regards,

Eric
