Re: Prevent possible Seagate hard drive crashes!

Hello, Does this apply to seagate HDD's purchased seperatly or just ones that were factory installed? I just purchased a seagate 500gb. HDD 3.5" Barracuda with a 2008 date on the box. It seems to be working ok so far. any suggestions?

                                                                                                                                        Thanks, Rick.

Re: Prevent possible Seagate hard drive crashes!

I like your screenname. I too am a Chevy Guy 4 Life. Now to attempt to answer your question. From all my research on the issue, yes this applies to all Seagate drives when they are used as the Primary Boot HDD. If you are installing the drive as a secondary drive and not booting from it then you don't need the update.

Here is a link to the Seagate site:

Seagate Firmware Update

From there you should be able to determine if your HDD needs the update and get the software.

Hope this helps.

Re: Prevent possible Seagate hard drive crashes!

I just installed the firmware update. No problems. Went smoothly but I did have a fear my power would go out in the middle of it.:smileyhappy:

Kantucki:

Good to know that someone got the update to work without any additional problems. I'd be interested to know which update you used; the one from HP or the one from Intel. Might help others too.

Re: Prevent possible Seagate hard drive crashes!

I went directly to the Seagate website and studied these two pages before copying the file to disc and updating.

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207951&Hilite=

Using the first link I identified my harddrive as one in need of the firmware update. On the second link I clicked on the download that matched my model number, copied to disc, rebooted and followed the instructions on the black screen and that was it. It took just a minute or two.

The information I picked up in this thread ready helped also. Much appreciated. :smileyhappy:

Re: Prevent possible Seagate hard drive crashes!

Hello, I went to the seagate site to see if my HDD is on the list for the firmware update. when I put my serial # in, it says invalid input?? This is the serial # on the box my HDD came in. Do you have to set up an account with them first??

                                                                                                                            Thanks, Rick..

Re: Prevent possible Seagate hard drive crashes!

No account is necessary. When I put in my serial number the first time it said it was invalid also. I went back and checked and sure enough I had mistaken a Q for an 0. After I chanced it, they identified my HD as one that needed updated firmware. Take a look at your serial number a second time just in case it happened to you too.

Re: Prevent possible Seagate hard drive crashes!

Thanks, I tried it again. I had mistaken an o for a zero. It worked with the zero, and said, not affected, no action required. I lucked out on that. LOL.
