RAM upgrade.

Hello again, back with another question. I added more RAM to my computer and must have done something wrong...doesn't work. A few details- it is the p6320y desktop. I check the system specs and here is what I saw concerning RAM upgrade. Dual channel, 4 DIMM DDR3 (240 pin), supported-PC3 10600 DDR3 1333, PC3 8500 DDR3 1066, non ECC unburrered, supports 4GB DDR3 DIMM, supports 16GB on 64 bit PC (i have windows 64 bit OS, came with the comp.). Here is what I ordered from Newegg- Kingston 4GB 240 pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC10600). I THINK I ordered the correct memory. Not sure about the SDRAM part though. Could someone please take a look and see if I may have ordered the wrong RAM. I installed the memory correctly, made sure it snapped and lock in place.Turned on my computer, it came on but nothing on the monitor. Also, the drive light sort of "pulsed" on and off. I reinstalled the sticks I replaced and everything works fine. Need to find out what to do so I can get these back to Newegg and get the correct memory. Thanks for any help.

You should be ordering dimms in a matched pair for best results. If you bought just one dimm then it may not work. Review the below image. After installing the 4GB dimm in the correct slot then try clearing the CMOS.

If necessary, use CPU-Z to determine the CAS latency of your existing dimms and compared that against what you have purchased.

If the above doesn't work then return the dimm and try a matched pair of 4GB dimms.

Dave, thanks for the quick reply. I  have cpuid, is this the same as cpuz? The only reference to latency I can see is "CAS# latency 7.0 clocks". Is that it? I purchased 4 sticks of 4GB RAM. Does it matter which slot each one goes into?

Hi,

Your PC only has four dimm slots so if the four 4GB dimms all match then it doesn't matter.

The safest way to memory upgrades is to go to Kingston, Crucial or Corsair and use their memory tools. Then followup with a call to sales or techncial support to confirm that you have the correct dimms.  If you buy directly from the manufacturer and the dimms don't work then they will exchange them for you.

I checked the latency on the sticks I ordered and they are 9. The sticks in my comp. are 7. If what I read on CPUID (latency 7.0 clocks) is right could that be the problem? I found the correct ones (7) on Newegg. Do you think it would be safe to order them?

Did you try the memory tools at the sites that I recommended?  If yes, then are you planning on buying those same memory dimms from NewEgg?

I looked at Kingstons web site. They seem a bit pricey but they recommended a couple of sites to buy their products from that were a bit cheaper. One was Newegg. I found what I believe to be a compatible RAM for my computer (per HP specs site). Problem is the processor I ordered was compatible also according to HP specs site. They failed to mention about the voltage requirement's though. Can't return a processor. According to some of the reviews about the RAM, everyone liked the RAM but one said it didn't work with their motherboard. The site gave a listing of compatible boards, but mine (Pegatron) was not on the list. Is there a way to be sure the RAM will work with my board or do I just buy it, try it, and send it back if it doesn't?

Hi,

Are you looking at this dimm? KTH9600B/4G   It has the same CAS latency 9 and voltage (1.5v) as your current dimms. The HP part number for dimms in your PC indicates CAS 9 and 1.5 volt.

You seem to have doubts. In that case, contact Kingston, confirm that you think you have the right dimms and then ask about a refund if the memory fails to work.

On the copy of CPUZ I have it says the "CAS# Latency 7.0 clocks)". Is this the latency you are talking about? I don't see 9 anywhere.
