RMA bad HP Seagate Hard Drive

Took out a bad Seagate Hard Drive from one of my HP desktops. Still within 3 year Seagate warranty period. Since taking out hard drive have since bought more HP desktops. Trying to get an RMA from HP for replacement of bad drive. Am told unless I have the serial number of the HP desktop from which the bad drive was taken from  HP cannot replace my hard drive.  Well, to make a long story shorter, I don't have the time to look into each HP desktop to see where this bad hard drive came from. Anybody know a way around this with HP? One customer rep told me if I had no number to the HP PC, I'm out of luck.

Hello RonaldBoy, Any hard drive that was shipped in an OEM system has only the warranty of the OEM system.

 

If a Seagate hard drive was shipped in a HP system with a one year warranty, then the Seagate hard drive would have a one year warranty.

 

Only Retail hard drives have a three or five year warranty.

 

It appears the HP Support person advised you correctly.

I had a bad WDC drive and WDC knew by the serial # that the drive was a HP OEM drive. Because it was an OEM they showed no warranty on the drive and referred all RMA service to HP. HP required the computer model and serial # of the computer to replace the drive.

Great info. No need for me to pursue a replacement of a hard drive which I thought would also have a three year warranty. Very interesting to know that any hardware manufacturer of peripherals would limit their warranty coverage to the maximum length of coverage for the  pc itself.

Hello RonaldBoy, The OEM system builders all have this policy. They do not manufacturer any of the component parts they install in one of their systems.

 

The do contract with the manufacturers of the different components to provide them with the components they need, They do, at times, specify that a component be made to their specifications. This means that a video card model that ships in a Retail version with a certain model number may not have the same specifications as an OEM video card with the same model number.

 

Since the OEM purchases these components by the thousands, they get them at a very good price, and warrant them as part of the system and not individually.

 

This procedure is the Industry Standard practice. It works the same as the operating system or other software that comes with your system. It is supported by the OEM and not Microsoft for example when the operating system is Windows.

 

Just some thoughts.
